Police have identified the man killed in the parking lot of the Roaring Spring True Value Department Store, 7565 Woodbury Pike, Roaring Spring, on Friday evening, July 26.
State Police Hollidaysburg have identified the deceased as Todd Messner, 49, of Three Springs.
Blair County Coroner Patty Ross said that an autopsy performed Saturday, July 27, showed that Messner died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
The incident unfolded after Roaring Spring borough police were dispatched to the Dollar General store in Roaring Spring at around 4:16 p.m. Friday after the Blair County 911 Center received multiple calls about a man acting erratically.
According to police reports, an officer arrived and attempted to make contact with Messner. During the encounter, he allegedly displayed a weapon and turned toward the officer, prompting the officer to fire his service weapon, striking Messner in the chest.
Messner was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Pennsylvania State Police major cases team arrived on the scene Friday afternoon and began an immediate investigation.
Pa. State Police Trooper Christopher Fox said that the state police unit interviewed several witnesses at the scene. The state police are asking that anyone who may have seen anything relating to this incident call the Hollidaysburg State Police barracks at (814) 696-6100.
Police have not identified the officer involved in the shooting. More information is expected to be released early next week.
Officers from Martinsburg, Freedom Township and Greenfield Township, along with AMED and the Roaring Spring Volunteer Fire Company, assisted while on scene.
