A 33-year-old Montour County man with ties to Morrisons Cove drowned Saturday evening, July 20, in Chillisquaque Creek in the Mooresburg area.
Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn pronounced Arlen L. Weaver dead at 9:34 p.m. as the result of drowning.
Weaver’s wife is Joy L. (Sweigart) Weaver, formerly of the Roaring Spring area. Her parents are Charles and Sarah Sweigart. Joy grew up along State Route 36, behind the Morrisons Cove Produce Auction, Roaring Spring. Joy was a member of the Woodbury Mennonite Church, where many of her family still attend.
Arlen and Joy are the parents of three children, Justin, 10, Jordan, 7, and Jaron, 3.
According to Lynn, Arlen Weaver and his family were at the creek when Weaver, who did not know how to swim, used a beach ball as a flotation device as he entered the water. The coroner said he lost his grip and became submerged.
Emergency officials said Weaver had been under water for 10 minutes when the call came in to the Montour County 911 center at 4:59 p.m.
A 911 dispatcher said emergency crews, including two dive teams, from four counties responded to the call. Lynn said the body was not recovered until 9 p.m. He pronounced Weaver dead 34 minutes later.
A viewing will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. today, Thursday, July 25, at the Millville Mennonite Church, 292 Taylor Road, Millville. A viewing will also be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 26, and a funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at the Rheems Mennonite Church, 1435 Schwanger Road, Mount Joy.
