Takin' It to the Streets in Hollidaysburg

Downtown Hollidaysburg came alive after hours last Thursday, July 18, to the sounds of classic rock as the Downtown Live Concert Series continued on the Diamond. Folks lined Allegheny and North Montgomery streets to dance and sing along with "Hot Wax Classic Rock," a central Pennsylvania-based rock band.

With temperatures soaring into the 90s, guitarist Mike Zerbee went wireless so he could take his guitar and vocals to the street and into some shade. He thanked "Whoever built that building," referring to the former Wierman's furniture store building at the corner of North Montgomery and Allegheny streets, for quickly providing shade from the intense sunshine.

This year the stage was shifted in front of prime event sponsor, The Capitol Hotel, to allow traffic to continue flowing on Allegheny Street until closer to the 6 o'clock performance.

Katrina Pope, Hollidaysburg Borough director of community relations and events, said that North Montgomery will still close at 2 p.m., Allegheny Street is open until 4:30 and Front Street is not closed until 5 p.m., allowing people to still get to First National Bank on concert days. In past years, the stage was centered on North Montgomery Street, with Chimney Rocks as the backdrop.

Another new feature is a featured food truck. This week Shuman's Concessions was selling a variety of sausage, hot dog and pulled pork sandwiches. Each concert will feature a different food vendor.

Thursday, Aug. 1, will feature "Bonejacked," the rain-delayed concert from June, with Doug's Dawgs as the food truck feature.

Thursday, Aug. 15, brings "Stephanie & The Wild Hearts," then Sept. 19 is "Felix & The Hurricanes." All the Downtown Live Concerts are sponsored by The Capitol Hotel, Old Canal Inn and Investment Savings Bank.

Commenting on her first official event, Pope said, "I think it speaks volumes to our community that the people who organize the events and the people that attend them, that we can have the first day of Duncansville Community Days, the Wing Off at the American Legion and the Downtown Live event and are all supported by the community and that all events are free to the public to attend."
