According to statistics released last month by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), there were 106 line-of-duty law enforcement deaths in the United States and its Puerto Rican territory in 2018.
Of those 106, 55 officers died as a result of a felonious act while 51 died in accidents. But no matter the manner of death, each officer gave their lives while protecting ours.
The death of a public servant is a loss we all feel. Every day when they put on the uniform their lives are at risk, yet day after day they do it. It is, as Blair County Sheriff James Ott said, "a calling."
