Cove Prepares for Memorial Day

Memorial Day will be marked with special services Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, throughout the Morrisons Cove area.

American Legion posts, Veterans of Foreign Wars groups and their auxiliaries and communities have planned the services that are listed by town.

All events are open to the public.

Martinsburg

Martinsburg's Memorial Day services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday with a program held in the Kenneth and Gladys Weaver Banquet Hall at Morrisons Cove Memorial Park.

Dr. David Crumrine, director of ministry at First Church of the Brethren, Roaring Spring, will be the morning's guest speaker.

Following the closing prayer, the Ladies Auxillary will hold a small memorial service at the park entrance.

A parade will then proceed from Memorial Park – along South Walnut Street to Allegheny Street, west to Market Street, then north to Fairview Cemetery. There a tribute will honor fallen comrades of all wars and service. Boy Scouts and the Ladies Auxiliary will lay wreaths at the monument. A 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps will conclude the ceremony.

Activities are planned by D. Merl Tipton Post 43, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and its Ladies Auxiliary.

Roaring Spring

The Murray-Appleman Post 147 of the American Legion, Ray-Camp Post 7689, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion and VFW auxiliaries will hold their annual Memorial Day program Monday at Greenlawn Cemetery. The service will follow the Memorial Day parade, scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. at Garver Memorial YMCA and disband at the cemetery.

Mark Nelson of the VFW will give the address.

Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 147, will raise the flags during the national anthem.

Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts will place flowers and flags throughout the cemetery.

Central High School and Spring Cove Middle School bands will perform during the ceremony.

In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Murray-Appleman gym, located at 300 Poplar St. in Roaring Spring.

Claysburg

American Legion Post 522, Claysburg, will hold its 86th annual Memorial Day program Sunday and Monday. Sunday's events will include visits to six local cemeteries, while Monday's ceremony will take place at Union Cemetery. In case of inclement weather, Monday's ceremony will be held at Christ Lutheran Church.

Sunday's schedule will begin at 1:15 p.m. at the Sproul Cemetery, followed by 1:35 at King, 2:05 at Imler, 2:25 at Greenfield, 2:50 at Lower Klahr, 3:10 at Upper Klahr and 3:45 at Mount Hope, Blue Knob. The Claysburg American Legion Band will provide music at each visit. The program also will include readings and hymns. A rifle company will salute the dead, and a bugler will play Taps.

Monday's service is scheduled for 10 a.m. It will be similar to Sunday's and will include patriotic music by the Claysburg Community Chorus and vocalist Jackie Couch. Pastor Ronald Bashore of Claysburg Church of the Brethren will deliver the memorial address. Readings and hymns will highlight the service. The program will conclude with a rifle salute to the dead and Taps.

Williamsburg

The Williamsburg Memorial Day Parade will be at 9 a.m. Monday. The parade will form at St. Joseph Catholic Church and will make its way through town, ending at cemeteries for military service.

The Williamsburg American Legion, Post 456, and the Legion's Auxiliary will serve a free breakfast for all veterans at 7 a.m. Monday at the Williamsburg Community Center.

Potter Creek

Potter Creek Lutheran Church, 177 years old, will be the site of a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Pastor Paul R. Snyder of Holsinger Church of the Brethren will give the message. His wife, Janet, will provide special music, accompanied by Lucille Dell.
