Martinsburg’s Brick Streets

Herald of May 23, 1919

The paving of Martinsburg’s main thoroughfare which was started last fall, is now completed. What is known as West Allegheny street has just recently been finished and was thrown open to the public late Saturday afternoon. South Market street and a portion of West Allegheny street were bricked and open to the public since last fall. The work was performed by the Standard contracting company of Altoona.

These two streets connect with improved highway on the south and west and are a credit to our town, as well as a permanent and substantial improvement. Considerable traffic passes over South Market and West Allegheny, which together make up the greater portion of the street surface that had to be kept in repair by the borough. Considerable money has been spent on these streets in the past, which of course came from the pockets of the tax payers of the past, who could afford it no better than those of the present day. What has been done at present time adds to the credit of the present citizens.
