NBC Track, Field Teams Knock Off S. Huntingdon

Northern Bedford’s girls’ track and field team improved to 3-5 overall with a 93-57 win over Southern Huntingdon on April 17. The Lady Panthers fell to league leading Southern Fulton 98-52.

Denae Hershberger was a double winner for NB, taking the 1600 and 3200 runs.

The only other winners for the Lady Panthers were McKenzie Troutman in the pole vault, where she is unbeaten this year, and the 4x100 relay team of Mara Laird, Courtney Morris, Paige Snider and Aylisa Morral.

“We had several season best performances tonight and continue to improve. Depth is our biggest issue but there is not much we can do about that,” NB coach Jeff Batzel said.

Panthers Sweep ICC

Opponents, Now 6-2

The Northern Bedford boys’ track and field squad continued its successful season with a double-dual sweep of Southern Fulton and Southern Huntingdon on April 17.

The Panthers (6-2) defeated SF 107-43 and SH 77-73 in a meet that was for sole possession of second place in the Inter-County Conference.

The Southern Huntingdon meet saw the Panthers down 72-55 with just three events remaining. Tavian Walter, Bryce Detterline and Case Donaldson swept the triple jump and then Cam Sherlock and Conner Laird took a one-two in the 3200-meter run to set up a winner take all 4x400-meter relay. In a very exciting race that came down to the final leg, Lucas Heck, Case Donaldson, Caleb Diehl and Ian Zimmerman held off a strong Rocket relay team to give NB the win and second place in the league standings.

“That was one of the more exciting dual meets I’ve been around for awhile,” NB coach Jeff Batzel said. “Our kids really dug in and performed well. The resurgence of the boys program is really exciting to see.”

The 4x400 relay squad ran the second-best time in District 5 this year with a 3:43.1. Ian Zimmerman, who anchored the relay, won four events – anchoring the 4x800 relay and winning both the 800- and 1600-meter runs.

Other individual winners for NB included Sherlock in the 3200 run and Caleb Diehl in the high jump. Laird and Justin Grine ran with Zimmerman and Sherlock on the 4x800 relay team.
