Morrisons Cove-Area Churches Announce Easter Services

Churches in the Morrisons Cove area have announced Easter services scheduled for today, April 18, through Sunday, April 21.

The following services were provided to the Herald. All services will be open to the public.

Martinsburg

Homewood at Martinsburg will host a Maundy Thursday service at 2 p.m. today, April 18, at the Bice Memorial Chapel and Givler Cultural Center. The chapel will hold a service at 2 p.m. Good Friday and a service at 8 a.m. on Easter.

The Martinsburg Area Association of Churches will again gather at St. Matthew Lutheran Church for a Good Friday Tenebrae service. Worship will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include participation by numerous pastors within the ministerium. The service will feature a series of Bible readings, hymns and prayers that will take attendees on a journey with Jesus Christ that leads them to the foot of his cross where, in the growing darkness of the church sanctuary, they experience the death of our Savior.

St. John’s United Church of Christ will host a combined Son-Rise Service with Memorial Church of the Brethren at 7 a.m. on Easter. There will be a combined choir – St. John’s, Memorial and Homewood Chapel. Pastor Chris Garretson and Pastor Mary Hendricks will offer an impromptu message. After the service all will be invited to Memorial for breakfast offered by its youth group.

Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church will hold Easter services at 9 and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday,

Roaring Spring

Trinity United Methodist Church will hold a Maundy Thursday foot washing and communion service at 7 p.m. today. A Good Friday service will be held at 7 p.m. An Easter Sunday service is set for 9:30 a.m.

First Church of the Brethren will hold a special presentation,” Steps of the Resurrection,” from 6 to 8 p.m. on Good Friday. Artistic talents provided by church members will feature dramas, writings, woodwork and art depicting the 14 steps Jesus took leading up to his crucifixion and burial.

Albright Church of the Brethren will hold an Easter Sunrise service at 7 a.m. on Sunday. Rob Carter will speak during the service. Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. in the fellowship hall, followed by the 9:30 a.m. worship service. with Pastor Jonas Hight.

Woodbury

Faith United Methodist Church will consider and experience Christ’s love and passion for us with two special worship experiences. The first will be on Maundy Thursday, In remembrance of Jesus’ last supper with his disciples in the upper room, the church will have a foot washing and communion service at 7 p.m.

On Good Friday, the church will re-enact Christ’s passion by carrying a cross through town, then nailing our sins to it beginning at 6:30 p.m.

In addition to these two Holy Week worship experiences at Faith Church, the Woodbury churches are planning a community sunrise service to be held at 7 a.m. on Easter at the Woodbury Area Community Center Easter.

Loysburg

St. John's Reformed Church of Loysburg will present a live dramatization of The Last Supper during a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. April 18. Pastor David M. Meckley will direct the performance and has invited the public to attend.

The service will include two anthems by St. John's choir and two hymns by the congregation. The service will close with Holy Communion.

St. John's will hold a sunrise service on Easter in addition to its Easter worship and Sunday School. The sunrise service will be at 8 a.m. in the pavilion, weather permitting. It will be led by church youth. Breakfast will be service by the Women's Guild at 8:35.

Worship with Holy Communion by intinction will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by Sunday School for all ages. A nursery will be staffed during the worship service for children up through age 4.

Claysburg

Christ Lutheran Church will hold the ministerium’s Good Friday service at 7 p.m. Various pastors will share the drama of Good Friday. The Claysburg Community Chorus, under the direction of Thomas Ringler, will perform.

Upper Claar Church of the Brethren will host an Easter sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. Pastor David Maxwell will be the guest speaker. Light refreshments will follow.

The Claysburg Church of the Brethren will hold a cantata at 10:30 a.m. on Easter. The church will have the children’s Easter musical “Because He Lives and the adult choir cantata “Jesus, Only King Forever.”
