No Southern Border Security: Is It a Plan?

To the Editor:

I agree with comments such as those made by Mr. William J. Kirsch of Roaring Spring in the March 14th edition of the Morrisons Cove Herald concerning the need for the United States of America to take control of its southern border. However, I respectively disagree with his comment that it is time we, as citizens must help our political leaders secure the border.

The fact that we must face is that the majority of politicians in Congress do not want to secure the border. They have kicked the can of border security and fixing the immigration system down the road for over 30 years. The question is, WHY? The first and foremost responsibility of the federal government is to protect the country and its citizens. Allowing people to stream across our border unchecked and unverified while allowing them the same rights as a citizen makes no sense. We are not talking about legal immigration. We are talking about people breaking the law and being rewarded for it. With the exception of people of Native American decent all of us are descendent of immigrants to some degree. In my personal case all of my grandparents were legal immigrants who arrived on this countries shores with one suitcase, no money and who never received a handout and never complained.

It is time we demand Congress takes its responsibility seriously and secures the border. Instead of solving the problem they instead choose to politicize it for personal and political gain. I am not just talking Democrats, although they certainly deserve a lot of credit for the situation we are presently in. The Republicans as well are not blameless. They had opportunities to solve the problem or at least make steps forward but also failed to take action.

So the question remains, WHY is Congress not willing to resolve the border issue? WHY do they ignore their first and most important responsibility, the safety of the country and its citizens? I must assume it is to posture each party in a position of greater power so they can take credit for a solution. I must also assume there is something for each part to gain from adding immigrant voters to the roles by allowing illegal's into the country and granting them voting rights as non-citizens, something which has already been suggested by Nancy Pelosi, Democratic leader and speaker of the house.

While Congress fiddles and argues if it should be called a wall, a barrier, a fence or simply a “No Trespassing” sign on a stick, our Southern Border burns and threatens it ignite our entire county. We have two crisis in our country, one is border security and the second and more dangerous one is the crisis of political no-action in Washington, D.C. It is way past time we fix both problems for good.
