Cove Club Resumes Meetings

The Cove Community Club will resume its monthly meetings at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, at the New Frontier Restaurant, Hopewell RR.

This club, formerly known as the Federation of Women's Club, started in 1960. In 2005 the federation was dropped and thus it is now called Cove Community Club.

This club meets the third Tuesday of every month at various local restaurants. The goal is to have socialization and raise money to help local people in the community. This past year money was donated to Northern Bedford High School to help with its scholarship program. Also, the women provided chocolate milk, cookies and books to children at Northern Bedford Elementary School. They helped Santa by distributing these items to the classrooms.

Dues are collected each year. Women take turns providing a small favor, devotions and something of interest each month. The meal is ordered and paid for by each member. This provides women of all ages a chance to get out and socialize, eat a meal together and also help their community by giving back.

The last meeting was held in December, where Barb Thomas of New Enterprise entertained the group by playing the dulcimer. A dulcimer, as Thomas explained, is the only true American folk instrument with a bagpipe-like sound. The dulcimer is a plucked instrument and first appeared in the 1800s from the Scots Irish in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, and thus called a mountain dulcimer or an Appalachian dulcimer. The dulcimer made of wood has different sound holes shaped differently that provides the sound.

Patricia Sutton is the president of the Cove Community Club and said new members are welcome.
