American Cancer Society Spotlight – Blair County

The American Cancer Society, the largest voluntary health organization, is committed to continuing to ensure people facing cancer have the help they need, as well as continuing the fight for access to quality healthcare, lifesaving screenings, groundbreaking research, and pivotal programs and services in central Pennsylvania.

Events such as Relay For Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and distinguished events throughout the central Pennsylvania region enable the Society to raise critical funds to support our overall mission. With our supporters we are making important contributions that have led to significant progress against cancer. Prevention efforts, early detection, and better treatments have meant a 26-percent decline in cancer mortality rates since 1991, and that we’ve avoided 2.4 million cancer deaths nationwide.

The American Cancer Society currently funds more than $402,000,000 in research and health professional training grants across the United States, including 44 grants totaling $27,184,750 in Pennsylvania. Locally, three grants totaling $1,152,792 are in effect at Penn State University.

Last year the American Cancer Society provided more than 340,000 rides to or from treatment and other cancer-related appointments nationwide through our Road to Recovery program. Additionally, the Society enabled 451,000 nights of free lodging at our Hope Lodge communities, and more than 49,000 nights of free or low-cost lodging through our Hotel Partners Program.

In 2018 (January through October), the society provided 73 total rides to treatment, and 91 nights of free lodging to cancer patients in Blair County. Additionally, through the Society’s wig program, 41 wigs were provided to local patients.

Our website, cancer.org, had more than 106 million visits last year, and our 24/7 helpline responded to over 1.34 million calls and live chats from those seeking information, support, and resources. Always just a phone call away,
