At a brief Spring Cove School Board meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 19, Superintendent Dr. Betsy Baker extended her thanks for everyone's diligence during the 2018-19 school year in seeking out and pursuing various grants from a wide variety of sources throughout the course of the year.
She gave a shout-out to Business Manager Kathy Hazenstab and Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds Lucas Runk for their efforts in securing a Food Service Equipment Grant for Spring Cove Elementary in the amount of $5,992 for a reach-in refrigerator. With this latest grant award, the district total in competitive grant awards to this point is $579,660. Last year's combined total was $65,250.
Final touches are still being put on the Central High School gymnasium. The bleacher scorers' table arrived on Thursday, Feb. 14, and was immediately put to use. This was another purchase of equipment at the new gymnasium by the Dragon Pride Foundation.
The Dragon Pride Foundation and Morrisons Cove Rotary Club are planning the annual golf outing fundraiser. The date of the event has been moved to June 14. Burger King once again has agreed to be the outing sponsor.
Dr. Baker thanked the local business leaders in the community for supporting Spring Cove School District students in many ways such as the local business leaders which provided Junior Achievement lessons for students at the Spring Cove Middle School.
Also, Dr. Baker reported that Central High School had mock interviews for the junior class and local business representatives served as the interviewers. Students had to dress up, bring a resume and respond to various interview questions.
Dr. Baker said that these experiences are "fantastic opportunities" for Central students and expressed strong gratitude for all the community support.
A motion was also passed unanimously to approve the disbursement of donations to local libraries, fire companies and ambulance services as approved in the 2018-19 general fund budget.
They include $3,500 to Martinsburg Community Library, $3,500 to Roaring Spring Community Library, $500 to the East Freedom Volunteer Fire Co., $500 to Friendship Fire Co., $500 to Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Co,, $450 to AMED Ambulance Service and $450 to the Hollidaysburg American Legion Ambulance Service.
A motion to approve the list of 2018-19 spring coaching appointments and salaries was approved unanimously.
The superintendent needs to be authorized to hire a replacement for the junior high assistant softball coaching position with ratification by the school board at the regular March meeting.
In other personnel matters, the board accepted unanimously, for the purpose of retirement, the resignation of elementary teacher Susan Claar, with March 1 as her last day. Claar has served in the Spring Cove School District for 24 years.
The next Spring Cove School Board Committee-of-the-Whole meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 11, at the administration office board room.
