Charles E. “Chick” Kanode, 77, of Martinsburg, passed away late Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019 at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, after a brief illness.
A funeral was held on Monday, Jan. 28, at Martinsburg Mennonite Church. Pastor Joseph H. Furry Jr. officiated.
Private interment was held at Spring Hope Cemetery, Martinsburg.
Charles was born on July 5, 1941, in Roaring Spring, son of the late, Arthur S. “Art” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Wagner) Kanode.
He married Janice E. Ebersole on June 22, 1968, in Martinsburg.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 50 years; two children: Andrea (Corey) Brown of Martinsburg and Hahns (Suzy) Kanode of Weyers Cave, Virginia; two grandchildren: Nicholas and Abigail Kanode of Weyers Cave; two sisters: Rita (C. William) Baker of New Enterprise and Rosalie (G. Wayne) Smith of Martinsburg; and a brother, Dalton (Paulette) Kanode of Warsaw, Indiana.
He was a 1959 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg, and also attended Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania.
Charles was a faithful member of Martinsburg Mennonite Church, where he actively served in various capacities, including longtime church organist.
He retired as a purchasing agent from Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, with 17 years of service. Charles also was employed at Blank Book Co., Roaring Spring, for nine years and Clapper Farm Equipment, Alexandria, for several years.
Charles enjoyed music and also loved working as a volunteer at World’s Attic Thrift Shop, Somerset.
