Dragons Split Home Games

The Central Dragons boys' basketball team played its first two home games of the season last week with mixed results.

Although their defense stood out in both games, their offense came up short against league rival Tyrone. The Dragons' record now stands at 11-2 on the season.

Tyrone 37, CHS 26

On Tuesday, Jan. 15, Central hosted Tyrone in front of a full house and scoring was hard to come by. Each team tallied just nine baskets in the game and the Dragons had a slim 4-3 advantage in made 3 point baskets. Tyrone held a large 16-4 advantage in made foul shots to escape with a 37-26 victory.

Braden Kitt scored the majority of the points for Central with 14, while Noah Muthler's three long-range hoops totaled nine points. Central had a 23-21 advantage in rebounds as both Kitt and Hunter Klotz tallied seven. Central connected on just 9-of-35 shots compared to 9-of-32 for the visitors.

CHS 47, Penns Valley 22

On Friday, Jan. 18, Penns Valley (now 8-5) entered the Dragons' den and were shut out the entire first half. Central led 15-0 at intermission against its patient opponent. All five Dragon starters scored in the opening half.

The Rams opened up their offense in the second half but still were outscored 32-22, setting the final score at 47-22.

Braden Kitt finished with 12 points, followed closely by Noah Muthler with 11. Lleyton Kling scored eight, Hunter Klotz and Thad Albright six and Devin Boyles four in the balanced attack.

Muthler ripped down nine rebounds for the Dragons, while Kitt and Klotz had eight apiece. Albright dished out seven assists, and Muthler was credited with four steals.

"The guys played great defense both games and rebounded extremely well," Central coach Reggie Nevins said. "Neither team could get the ball to fall against Tyrone, and we missed about half a dozen layups. It was just one of those nights.

"The first half against Penns Valley was amazing. I never was associated with a total shutout for a half. We were up 15 points and really should have been ahead by 25. They scored a total of nine baskets in the second half. If we can maintain that kind of defense we'll have a shot most nights."

The Dragons are scheduled to play three times at home this week. Monday (Jan. 21) against Hollidaysburg, Wednesday (Jan. 23) against Bald Eagle Area and today, Thursday, Jan. 24, they'll host Bellefonte.
