Jeremy Knott Returns to Claysburg-Kimmel's School Board

Claysburg-Kimmel school directors named a familiar face to the board of directors on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Jeremy R. Knott was unanimously appointed to the board, replacing long-standing member Cathy Barnes. Barnes, who had served on the board since June 2000, retired in December due to health reasons.

Knott previously served on the board for six full years (2012-2017), including two as president.

"I am glad to be back on the board," Knott said. "I am passionate about the success of the district."

Knott said he and his wife have three young children, all who will be attending C-K schools.

Knott will serve the remainder of Barnes' term, which will be through December 2019.

Richard Gergely, board president, administered the oath of office to Knott, who then took a seat among the boardmembers for the remainder of the meeting.

2019-20 Budget

The board approved the Act I Budget Resolution, which indicates the 2019-20 real estate millage (tax rate) will remain with the Inflation Index of 3.4 percent. The index for the 2018-19 school year was 3.6 percent.

Michelle Smithmyer, the district's business manager, said this doesn't mean that the board won't raise taxes.

"The resolution means real estate taxes won't be raised about the Inflation Index," Smithmyer said.

If the board raises real estate taxes to the full 3.4 percent, Smithmyer said it would generate approximately $80,000 for the school district.

In other business, the board approved Dr. Michael Hoover as the district's dentist and Claysburg Physician Group as district physician.

The board appointed Joan Rhodes to the position of elementary AmeriCorps staffer.

The resignation of Russ Knisley from his position as assistant varsity softball coach was approved by the board.

The board recognized the Ski Club as an approved student activity. Rebecca Benton as approved to the position as the club's advisor.

Secondary Principal Stephen Puskar said there are about 25 students who have signed up for the Ski Club. He said the club will have four outings to Blue Knob All Seasons Resort, Claysburg.

The board amended the 2018-19 school calendar to reflect early student dismissal days for Feb. 15 and April 18.

The board will hold its next official meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.
