Lady Pirates Top NBC

The Williamsburg High School girls’ basketball team opened its 2018-19 campaign Dec. 7 with a 40-30 victory against visiting Northern Bedford.

The Lady Pirates led by a 19-10 score at halftime then outscored their visitors 21-20 in the last 16 minutes.

Alexis McMonagle scored a game-high 12 points and hit two 3-pointers for Williamsburg. Marcella Lynn hit two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. Kassidy McChessney and Madison Mikesic each added seven points in the victory.

“With the junior high and JV Lady Pirates getting wins earlier in the night, it was nice to have a win in the varsity home opener,” Williamsburg coach Shannon McCall said “It was huge for this young team. It was a chance to see where we were after a short preseason practice schedule.

“Northern Bedford did not let us get comfortable and we needed to adapt and the girls did a wonderful job.”

Northern Bedford was led by Ariel Reed’s nine points. Madison Cottle hit two 3-pointers and finished with eight points, while Cameron Pressel added seven points.
