The Claysburg-Kimmel High School boys’ basketball team opened its season by winning the Northern Cambria Tipoff Tournament held Dec. 7-8.
C-K defeated Saegertown 73-52 in the opening round then scored a 58-47 victory over Northern Cambria in the title game.
In the opener, C-K jumped out to a 19-7 lead afear the first quarter and held a 41-27 advantage at halftime. The Bulldogs won the second-half scoring 32-25.
Dominic Francona led C-K with 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Alex Kulick (two 3-pointers) added 15 points and Landan Bauman 14 in the victory. Kyle Glass also scored in double figures with 12, including two treys.
Against Northern Cambria, C-K fell behind 25-22 at halftime but broke the game open with a 12-5 run in the third quarter. The Bulldogs on the final eight minutes 13-10.
Bauman scored 14 points and earned tourney MVP honors. Kulick (two 3-pointers) and Glass each added 10 points. Francona chipped in with nine points.
“I thought we really got off to a great start to the season, “ C-K coach Mike Harris said. “Our press was really effective the first game – creating lots of turnovers and fast-break points.
“Northern Cambria really slowed the game down, and we had to grind it out, but our kids did a great job of adjusting, and they shut down their top players. Great win.”
