  • A Pair Of Fly Rods

    Jun 23, 2022

This past winter I bought a pair of fly rods. I really did not need either of them, but for several reasons I wanted them. The first one was a Sage XP model, a model that is no longer produced. New, XPs were expensive rods that good flycasters (not me) could use to heave fly lines for long distances. I had once owned an XP. A fishing guide needed some money to buy a new bow for archery hunting, so he sold me the XP and another rod at reduced prices. However, after only a couple of years, he...

  • Williamsburg Baseball Coach Bobby McCall to Retire

    DUNCAN WEIGAND, Herald Intern|Jun 23, 2022

Williamsburg’s historic baseball season has come to an end. Williamsburg made it to the State Playoffs this year despite the odds being stacked against them. One of the main reasons Williamsburg was able to pull this off with the help of Head Coach Bobby McCall. McCall has decided to end his coaching career after 31 years. McCall, who has been coaching baseball in the Williamsburg area for 6 years, said it was a hard choice for him to make. He also spoke on the stresses that came with coaching. “We have always had low numbers,” McCall said....

After only five innings against the Lancaster Catholic Crusaders in the state championship, the Dragons left triumphant with a mercy-rule, 13-2 victory. With a state title on the line, the Dragons started out against the Crusaders with an offensive push. Paxton Kling was walked, but quickly advanced to third after a single by Jeff Hoenstine. Devon Boyles and Hunter Smith were both hit by pitches to score Kling, giving the Dragons an early 1-0 lead. Boyles headed the defensive front, pitching for...

  • Unclogging The Arteries

    Jun 16, 2022

When you get to be my age (72), medical issues are constant. Among these is the buildup of cholesterol, which is known to us old-timers as "clogging the arteries" and is not a laughing matter as it can cause many health issues. We're supposed to watch our diets. We are to exercise, which is something I do by fishing, hunting, walking, and trying to play basketball. Many of us take medicine, including statin drugs, to mitigate this clogging. I have taken a statin for years. Anyhow, a recent...

  • Recap: How the Dragons Got Here

    Jun 16, 2022

The further they advance in the playoffs, the more teams the Dragons dominate on their way to a state title. The Dragons faced the Mohawk Warriors defeating them in a 13-3, five-inning game, followed by a 7-1 victory over the Fairview Tigers. Against Fairview, Devon Boyles picked up the win on the mound, striking out eight while only giving up one run. To start the game at bat, the Dragons used a multitude of walks and Fairview errors to muster up an early lead. Hoenstine had an RBI single to drive in Kling for the first run. Ty Helsel then...

  • Kling: Focused on States, Looking Forward to Future

    Jun 16, 2022

Central High School star baseball player Paxton Kling is excited for what the future holds, but he is also focused on bringing home a state championship, something the Dragons haven't won since 2017. The senior's life has been filled with many accomplishments, including six games with the U.S. national under-18 team, commitment to Louisiana State University (LSU), and MLB draft buzz. Playing in the majors was always a dream for Kling, but he never thought he had a shot until his sophomore year....

  • Dragons Advance to the PIAA Class 3A Championships

    DUNCAN WEIGAND, Herald Intern|Jun 16, 2022

The Central Dragons got one step closer to a State Championship on Monday as they defeated the Punxsutawney Chucks 6-5 in a game that was filled with offensive firepower and back-and-forth action. In the bottom of the first, it was time for the Dragons to go to work. Paxton Kling roped a pitch into left field, rounded first and slid into second for a leadoff double. Punxy's Jake Sikora then plunked Jeff Hoenstine two quick pitches and two on for the Dragons. The Dragons then executed a double...

    DUNCAN WEIGAND, Herald Intern|Jun 16, 2022

When Jerry Brumbaugh and Dalton Metzger won the Major League Fishing (MLF) qualifiers at Smith Mountain Lake, the pair knew they were on the cusp of making history. Metzger and Brumbaugh watched on the stage while their fish were weighed. That's when the duo knew they had punched their ticket to the High School Fishing National Championship in Alabama....

  • What I Would Do

    Jun 9, 2022

A reader recently challenged me. "Rich, you're constantly criticizing the game commission's turkey-management policies. You say these policies are a major cause of the decline of the turkey population. So, put your money where your mouth is. What would you do to improve the population?" I wouldn't do much to fall hunting, though I might add a week of hunting, which wouldn't add much to the negligible fall harvest. I would work to make spring hunting more challenging and take a conservative...

Williamsburg's storybook run reached its final chapter Monday evening as the Blue Pirates fell 12-4 to Southern Fulton. The Blue Pirates went with pitcher Lambert Palmer. Southern Fulton elected to go with their Sophomore Ethan Mellot. Mellot, who is mostly used as a utility player, has had himself a solid season. In six appearances Mellot has a record of two wins and no losses, along with an ERA of 1.09. Lambert Palmer was the pitcher of choice for the Blue Pirates, who up to this point in the...

  • Dragons Soar Through First Round of State Playoffs

Central High School continued its dominance in the first round of the state playoffs. The Dragons improved to an astounding 25-0 after defeating Mohawk Area High School in a game that didn't even go a full 7 innings. Paxton Kling paved the way for the dominant 13-3 win over the Warriors in the opening frame. He roped a ball that took a while for the fielders to find. The fans watched as Kling hustled past first, breezed through second, rounded third, and headed for home. Kling got there,...

  • Curve Your Enthusiasm

    DUNCAN WEIGAND, Herald Intern|Jun 9, 2022

Editor's Note: This is an extended article. The abbreviated piece was in the print edition of the June 9 Herald. Minor-league baseball players are some of the most dedicated athletes in sports: seven-day workweeks involving practice, conditioning, batting practice, travel, and games, without the promise of even getting close to a major-league roster. There is a dichotomy of players in Double-A ball: players with potential of being something great, and some who will toil in the minors before fizz...

  • NBC Finishes Season in First Round of Playoffs

    MATTHEW HALL, Student Correspondent|Jun 2, 2022

The NBC baseball team ended their season with a 4-0 loss at Fannett-Metal in the first round of the D-5 playoffs this week. The Panthers struggled to get anything going offensively in this one, managing just six hits and zero runs. When the Panthers did reach base, they struggled with baserunning and were put out at second base on two different occasions, stopping potential rallies. Pitching and defense were both pretty solid, but Fannett-Metal was able to scratch across a few runs to win the game. The Panthers ended their season with a record...

    DUNCAN WEIGAND, Herald Intern|Jun 2, 2022

Williamsburg fell just short of their goal on Saturday in the PIAA Class 1A championship game, losing to Bishop McCort 7-4, in a game that was much closer than the scoreboard indicates. • Getting Into Trouble

    May 26, 2022

I sometimes write something in a column that a few readers find offensive. These readers are often not bashful about telling me about it. In a recent column about my son's harvesting a gobbler last spring, I included Bob's telling me that I was not to use baits (aka food plots), blinds, and decoys because he believes using them constitutes a dishonorable way to kill a turkey. He believes this because their use, especially the blinds and decoys, removes the gobbler's best defense: his sharp eyesi...

  • Future of Deer Management Clouded by Coming Steep Decline in Hunter Numbers

    May 19, 2022

Because so many deer hunters are aging out of the sport — and new hunters are not being recruited to replace them — deer management strategies will need to change to manage populations of whitetails in many states. That is the conclusion of Penn State’s Duane Diefenbach, one of the leading white-tailed deer researchers in the country. He suggests that demographic trends of big-game hunters will dictate that wildlife agencies consider modified, or completely new, regulations to manage white-tailed deer populations. “Recreational deer hunting...

  • Morel Time Nearing End

    May 19, 2022

After the first day of gobbler season had ended, several people told me I could concentrate on fly-fishing for the rest of the month. One of these was my son, Bob. However, he added, "You can go looking for mushrooms, too. You'll have time to find them now." I laughed at that comment, having tried several times to learn to find mushrooms, properly named morels, but having these attempts end in abject failure. One spring about 10 years ago, I found more than 40 morels in one morning. At that...
