Though this is his first year as the girls' coach, he has been the boys' coach for 23 years. Read more about Northern Bedford soccer and other Cove teams in the Herald's Fall Sports Preview, included in this edition....
Before launching the main theme of this column, here's an item I find interesting. A month ago I wrote that the Game Commission is considering reintroducing pine martens – predatory weasels – to the state. When trying to justify this introduction, the PGC cited statistics from a survey it reportedly conducted. PGC spokesmen noted that 92 percent of the respondents favored the introduction of the martens. The spokesmen also noted that this figure was about the same for hunters it surveyed. The...
When Williamsburg Community School District decided to shut down its football program and join Juniata Valley in a co-operative agreement, it could have been a case of subtraction by addition. Juniata Valley has been the Blue Pirates’ most-heated rival for decades, and the neighboring schools still were going to go at it tooth and nail in every other boys’ sport. Instead, though, the players put aside their natural enmity. Not only that, they thrived as a team, combining to form one of Valley’s best-ever teams with a Williamsburg stude...
Hollidaysburg Area High School football coach Homer DeLattre calls it “The Standard.” “‘The Standard’ is doing the right thing, being attentive practice-wise, making sure we’re focused on the fundamentals, paying attention to details when you’re not in, getting better every day,” DeLattre said. It’s been a successful approach. Despite often graduating three-quarters or more of their starting lineup and facing a challenging schedule, the Golden Tigers will be looking for their eighth consecutive season finishing at least .500 when they kick th...
Sometimes teams have to wait a half-season or more to find out what they’re really made of. The Central and Hollidaysburg Area football teams won’t have to. Or, the Scarlet Dragons and Golden Tigers won’t have that luxury, depending how you look at it. The respective squads might have their biggest game of the regular season in the very first week, playing on back-to-back nights at Altoona’s Mansion Park Stadium. Things get started on Friday night when Hollidaysburg renews a rivalry that traces its roots all the way back to 1900 against...
Central Dragon Nick Baum (left) placed first in the Central Counties Junior Championship at Park Hills Golf Club, shooting a 75 on Aug. 1, 2022. Dragon teammate Griffin Snowberger (right) placed third with a 79. On Aug. 3, 2022, the Iron Masters Ridge Runner tournament took place at Iron Masters Country Club. Snowberger took home his personal best round shooting a 69 to win it, while Baum shot a 72, taking second place....
Nearly a year later, Northern Bedford High School quarterback Eion Snider still reflects on what the Black Panthers accomplished last season with amazement and pride. "It was a dream, basically," Snider said. Snider and his teammates regrouped after a 1-3 start to win eight straight games and make it all the way to the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals before falling to eventual state runner-up Redbank Valley, 21-14. Now Northern Bedford, with a stable full of proven skill players and a line filled...
During the recent heat wave, I finally sat down and read a wonderful book that I had bought at the Pennsylvania Game Commission's website. The book, Bob Sopchick's "Penn's Woods Passages," is one that many Pennsylvania hunters will enjoy. At first the book appears to be a coffee-table book (8 1/2 x 10 inches), and it is indeed an attractive softbound book. However, inside is a 293-page collection of many articles Sopchick had published in the "Pennsylvania Game News" over the years. There are va...

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College congratulates its Women’s Softball program on being named one of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 2021-22 Academic Teams of the Year. In its inaugural season, the Lady Black Bears competed in Region 20 of the NJCAA while earning a GPA of 3.43. Pennsylvania Highlands Community College congratulates these student-athletes who have been recognized for their achievements in the classroom, including Jamie Detwiler, of Martinsburg. “These student-athletes thrived on and off the fie...
A number of years ago, one of Williamsburg's most enthusiastic deer hunters asked me if I carried a pistol while out scouting for turkeys or when fishing. "No," I replied. "Well, you are crazy not to. Sometime you are going to run into a coyote that has rabies, and the coyote is going to attack. You might want to have a pistol to even the odds. Heck, Rich, in some places coyotes that don't have rabies have already bitten people. You ought to have a handgun to defend yourself." He was right, of...
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) released its scholar-athlete list for the 2021-22 academic year and 169 Bald Eagles joined with 4,144 student-athletes from the league’s 18 institutions who were named to the list for the 2021-22 academic year. In order to be eligible, the 2021-22 student-athletes must have maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 upon completion of the academic year. Alyssa Daley, of Everett, a member of the Volleyball team, was one of those student-athletes recognized. Taylor Leidy, of Alexandria, a m...
Pennsylvania's turkey hunters have witnessed a steady decline in turkey numbers over the past decade. There are multiple causes for this, among which is the proliferation of predators. With the decline in interest in trapping, nest predators, such as raccoons and skunks, have increased in numbers and take a serious toll on turkey nests. Coyotes are also hard on turkeys. In addition, the game commission's establishment of fishers appears to have contributed to the decline in turkey numbers,...

The city of Altoona and the Blair County Pickleball Club will dedicate the new pickleball courts at Garfield Park at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23. Officials from the city, the Central Blair Recreation Commission and the BCPC will commemorate the transformation of two aging tennis courts into a pickleball-only facility that now features a six-court complex, the largest in Central Pennsylvania. The local pickleball club raised more than $90,000 from 50-plus donors to fund the project. Pat Dandrea...

Several weeks ago I fell for a couple of computer scams, both in one afternoon. One involved an email from what I believed was a reputable antivirus company telling me that it was automatically going to deduct $289.00 from my checking account to renew protection unless I called its number. Before I made the call, I asked Donna if this was our antivirus protector. "Noooo, Rich. That's a scam. Delete the email." The other popped up when I was investigating the weather and clicked on an...
Dalton Metzger and Jerry Brumbaugh finished at 9th place at the Major League Fishing High School Nationals. The competition, which started on June 22, lasted three days, and portions were televised. Brumbaugh and Metzger finished 9th out of 236 boats that competed at Pickwick Lake in Alabama. Despite the feat, the win is a little bittersweet for Brumbaugh, who was looking to repeat after winning last year. "Obviously now that I've won, ninth place isn't as big of an accomplishment for me,"...
The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners gave final approval to a measure that simplifies regulations and provides the Game Commission yet another tool to respond to below-goal turkey populations. In years past, reducing the length of the fall turkey season was the primary method to increase turkey populations. But last year, the Game Commission eliminated the use of centerfire and rimfire rifles in fall turkey season, noting that relatively few hunters used rifles, but rifles were responsible for about one-third of the fall turkey...
For 20 years, the Garver YMCA has hosted 60-and-over basketball players two mornings per week. Today’s over-60 players play on Tuesdays and Fridays, beginning at 9 a.m. Their games are played on a pick-up basis each day. Recently, however, there have been fewer players showing up. Some regulars have other summer activities, and several players have been dealing with injuries or other health issues. Several times, there have not been quite enough players to play. The Y and the present over-60 players are hoping that some new players might b...
Sportsmen who spend a great deal of time along rivers and creeks or in forests and along fields observe many things the average person never sees. Even the average person spots deer, groundhogs, rabbits, and squirrels regularly while driving. However, most non-sportsmen have probably never seen a coyote, yet many sportsmen have caught a glimpse or two of one of these wild canines. Fishermen and hunters also run into other wild creatures on an occasional basis. Among these are bears and bobcats....
The Healthy Blair County Coalition held its annual meeting on Friday, July 8, at the United Methodist Church in Hollidaysburg. The purpose of the meeting was to go over what the Coalition offered and give a brief overview of the "Blair County Profile 5: Community Health Needs Assessment." The Healthy Blair County Coalition was formed in 2007 when the Blair County Human Services office and United Way invited key officers to join in on making a needs assessment for the community. The Coalition...
During the summer, most sportsmen spend their time on or around the water. A few target trout in appropriate streams, and fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass hits it peak during the summer months. Most sportsmen do not think much about hunting during the summer. Hoping to locate a monster buck or two, a few diehard deer hunters are out glassing farm fields. Other than that, hunters do not do a whole lot during the summer. That was not always true. A dedicated cadre of sportsmen spent...
After defeating Lancaster 13-2 on Friday, June 17, the highs that come from winning a state championship haven't worn off quite yet. For Jeff Hoenstine, Devon Boyles and Ty Helsel, the magnitude of their accomplishment is just starting to set in. The Dragons won the state championship game for a community that has rallied around the team in a big way. Mayor Richard Brantner Sr. has named July 12 "Central Dragons Baseball Team Day," and the team has been invited to participate in the Ag Parade....
Joey Kennedy started Krush softball in 2012 and it has been growing youth sports ever since. Recently, the group held its annual basket bingo. Kennedy and the community were able to raise $6,000. Raising such a large amount of money is something Kennedy never expected to happen on a regular basis. “We started back in 2012 with one 10u team,” Kennedy said. “We practiced twice a week through the winter, and we travel all across the East Coast to try and play better competition.” “We hold a basket bingo every year,” Kennedy continued. “We get a l...

Although bass fishermen were on the water for much of the spring on a catch-and-release basis, the traditional bass-fishing season opened only a couple of weeks ago. Even though bass can now be harvested for tasty meals, most bass fishermen practice catch-and-release fishing. The first type of sport fishing my dad introduced me to as a kid was bass fishing on the "big river" downstream from Huntingdon. Like most bass fishermen of the time, we gathered live bait for our adventures. Our favorites...
Coach A.J Hoenstine and his Central Dragons baseball team completed their historic 27-0 season with a mercy rule 13-2 win over Lancaster in five innings on Friday, June 17, giving Central its first state championship since 2017. Coach Hoenstine is no stranger to baseball; he played baseball in college while getting his degree in education. He knows what its like to be a player. It's one of the major reasons why his players respect him and how he gets so much out of his players. "We talk about a...

The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rounded out its 2021-22 All-Sportsmanship team on Wednesday with the announcement of the sportsmanship picks from the league’s spring sports teams. All teams that compete for an AMCC championship select one member from each of their rosters who displays good sportsmanship throughout the season to be included on the All-Sportsmanship team. These individuals are selected by a vote of their teammates. The student-athlete selected by each team must consistently demonstrate a high level of ethical c...
Claysburg's Krush Softball's 8th annual basket bingo donations resulted in the 18U and 12U teams being able to raise over $6,000 for their upcoming softball seasons. The girls will be traveling to neighboring states such as Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and other areas of Pennsylvania. During a pandemic, it's so important for these players to continue some normalcy and stay active. Playing a sport they love is a great way to do that....

This past winter I bought a pair of fly rods. I really did not need either of them, but for several reasons I wanted them. The first one was a Sage XP model, a model that is no longer produced. New, XPs were expensive rods that good flycasters (not me) could use to heave fly lines for long distances. I had once owned an XP. A fishing guide needed some money to buy a new bow for archery hunting, so he sold me the XP and another rod at reduced prices. However, after only a couple of years, he...
Williamsburg’s historic baseball season has come to an end. Williamsburg made it to the State Playoffs this year despite the odds being stacked against them. One of the main reasons Williamsburg was able to pull this off with the help of Head Coach Bobby McCall. McCall has decided to end his coaching career after 31 years. McCall, who has been coaching baseball in the Williamsburg area for 6 years, said it was a hard choice for him to make. He also spoke on the stresses that came with coaching. “We have always had low numbers,” McCall said....

The Dragons completed their perfect 27-0 season on Friday, defeating Lancaster Catholic in a game that didn't even go the distance. Central barely broke a sweat in its 13-2 rout of the Crusaders. Lancaster Catholic went with their ace Noah Zimmerman, who had a 2-0 record and a stunning .96 ERA heading into the contest. Zimmerman had also pitched every game leading up to the state championship....
After only five innings against the Lancaster Catholic Crusaders in the state championship, the Dragons left triumphant with a mercy-rule, 13-2 victory. With a state title on the line, the Dragons started out against the Crusaders with an offensive push. Paxton Kling was walked, but quickly advanced to third after a single by Jeff Hoenstine. Devon Boyles and Hunter Smith were both hit by pitches to score Kling, giving the Dragons an early 1-0 lead. Boyles headed the defensive front, pitching for...
When you get to be my age (72), medical issues are constant. Among these is the buildup of cholesterol, which is known to us old-timers as "clogging the arteries" and is not a laughing matter as it can cause many health issues. We're supposed to watch our diets. We are to exercise, which is something I do by fishing, hunting, walking, and trying to play basketball. Many of us take medicine, including statin drugs, to mitigate this clogging. I have taken a statin for years. Anyhow, a recent...
