  • The Big Day

    RICHARD TATE|Mar 30, 2023

Saturday (April 1) is "the big day" for trout fishermen. It is the opening day of the regular trout season and is the day that I believe more people are in Pennsylvania's outdoors than on any other day. All stocked trout waters have received their preseason allotments of legal-size trout from stockings by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and from cooperative hatcheries operated by sportsmen's clubs. There are more trout finning the waters of the state's trout streams on the opening day...

  • Saturday is for Mentored Youth

    Mar 23, 2023

Saturday (March 25) is the day for young trout fishermen to get a jump on the regular trout season. It is the Mentored Youth Trout Fishing Day. This is a statewide one-day opportunity for young anglers to fish on stocked trout waters a week ahead of the regular opening day. This day, however, does not provide an opportunity for fishing on specially regulated waters. Though I am not a fan of most mentored youth hunting days because they seem rife with abuse, I am enthusiastic about the mentored...

    LUGENE SHELLY, For the Herald|Mar 23, 2023

Williamsburg Lady Pirate Basketball fans have been entertained this season by Jill (Tate) Norris' livestream of the games on the team's Facebook page. Norris' broadcast commentary is a mix of play-by-play, devoted fan and proud mother. The latter was especially evident when her daughter, Senior forward Kendel Norris, sank her first three-point basket ever in the District 6 semi-final game against Bishop Carroll. "Kendel for 3! Kendel Norris for 3 points," Jill screamed as Bishop Carroll took...

  • Other Guys' Ideas

    Mar 9, 2023

As a fly-fisherman I have come up with few original ideas. Most of the things I know about fishing had already been developed by older generations of fishermen. For instance, modern fly-fishermen sometimes think they invented fishing two dry flies at a time. That's a nice thought, but it isn't true. When I was young and learning to fly-fish, I saw local Williamsburg fisherman Sam Lower fishing two dry flies at a time. He chuckled and told me, "If one dry fly is good, sometimes two are better....

Moving on to next year is all that's left to do for the Central Boys Basketball team, who faced a devastating loss to the Johnstown Trojans in the District Six 4A championship as their last game. The Trojans jumped to a 7-0 lead right off the bat in the first quarter, and the Dragons were left trailing all night after. • Local Rugby Club Continues to Grow

    RICK BOSTON, Staff Writer|Mar 9, 2023

Rugby has been played for about 200 years and during that time has evolved into one of the world's most popular sports. And while it has been played in the United States since the mid-19th century, it hasn't gained wide-spread popularity here, but that seems to be changing. With more than 2,600 rugby union clubs and 900 collegiate teams, rugby is catching on in the United States and a local club is contributing to its growth. In 2014, Andy Haines wanted to bring his passion for rugby to local...

  • A Warning for Shed Hunters

    Mar 2, 2023

An outdoor activity that has become increasing popular during the past few years is shed hunting during the winter and early spring. Male deer lose their antlers each winter and then grow a new set the following year. Sportsmen like to search for the dropped antlers, called sheds. Finding sheds helps sportsmen know the quality of the bucks that have survived that year's hunting seasons. It might also suggest some locations to set up stands the following deer season. Some sportsmen have become...
