I have previously written of my disdain for cell phones. They are intrusive. However, my son, Bob, and my wife, Donna, both believe I should carry one when I am fishing or hunting alone; so in the interest of family harmony, I remember to carry the one they bought me about half the time I am out. I had it with me the morning I shot a nice gobbler this past spring. I called Bob quickly after tagging the beautiful turkey. When he picked up, I think he was happier about my success than I was. Most often, however, I use the phone to call Donna...
Central Football players Eli Lingenfelter, Kade Rhule and Jason Clark (from left) played on the South team at the 38th annual Lezzer Lumber Classic on Sunday, June 11. According to the Lezzer Lumber Classic's website, "in 1985, the Central Pennsylvania Football Coaches Association, with J. Gawen Stoker as the Game Director, initiated the Mid-State...

Sunday (June 18) is Father’s Day. It is one of the most important non-religious holidays of the year; others include Mother’s Day, Veterans’ Day, and Independence Day. Dad was a father who spent a great percentage of his time with me (and my brother, Bill) when he could have been doing other things. Though he didn’t coach sports, he nurtured our interest in athletics. When I was young, he often came out to the basket in our backyard and played basketball against my friends and me. In games of one-on-one, I could not beat him until I was a j...

State Representative Dave Maloney (R-Berks), Chairman of the House Game and Fisheries Committee, has been concerned with the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s (PGC) “management” of a number of things. One is that the PGC was found to be sitting on more than $72 million in escrow funds in 2019, including more than $6 million the PGC didn’t even know it had. Another is the moving of the rifle deer opener to Saturday, despite much opposition from the hunting community. The ruffed grouse population is at a 70-year low. (These are all problems I have...

Our minister recently preached a series of sermons entitled “Marked by God.” One of the themes of these sermons is that we are marked by God to make a difference in the things we are involved in. For me, that includes fishing and hunting ethics. I like to think I have made a small difference in fishermen’s attitudes. I often subtly refer to catch-and-release fishing as a major ethical consideration that today’s fishermen use to help maintain healthy populations of gamefish. I also hope I have made a small difference in anglers’ attitudes...
Softball The third seeded Lady Dragons faced the second seeded Juniata Lady Indians in the district six AAA semi-finals. A 6-0 loss will now end the Dragons' season. Early on in the game, the Dragons gave up a mere three runs to the Indians in the bottom of the first. The score for a majority of the rest of the game would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth inning, where the Indians added another three to their total to solidify a loss for the Dragons. The Dragons attained a mere two h...

On April 23, 2023, I visited the Pennsylvania Game Commission Southcentral Pennsylvania Office Building, expecting a formal presentation about the reintroduction of pine martens to Pennsylvania. There was no formal presentation. Instead, there were various display boards presenting information dealing with martens, and there was a table where mounted martens were shown in comparison to a larger fisher and a marginally smaller fox squirrel. PGC staff members were available to answer questions. The commission’s viewpoint promoting the r...

Against the Penn Cambria Panthers in the first round of the District Six 3A playoffs, the game looked bleak for the Central Dragons from the start. Coming into a two-run deficit after the second inning, and that deficit extending to six runs in the fourth, things were not great for the Dragons on either side of the ball. However, the rally began in the fourth inning, where Dalton Metzger managed to drive two runs in to break the Dragons’ cold streak. An inning later, Britton Marko achieved the same feat, now having the Dragons only trail by t...
In a long, four game week for the Dragons, they came out on top, 4-0, with many dominating victories. The Dragons jumped to a five-run lead in the first inning but that was dropped to two after the Mountaineers scored three in the second. The Dragons scored three in the fourth, while giving up two in the same inning. The Dragons exploded with nine runs in...

The Pennsylvania Game Commission recently released its estimated deer harvest figures for the 2022-2023 seasons. It estimated that hunters killed an incredible 422,960 deer, of which 164,190 were estimated to be bucks. Bowhunters were estimated to have killed more than a third of these deer: 145,640, of which 75,770 were supposedly bucks. David Stainbrook, PGC Deer and Elk Section Supervisor, says that Pennsylvania’s deer population is likely increasing. So, the PGC is planning to increase the number of doe tags by 147,000 to 1,095,000 this y...

A new Dollar General could soon be under construction north of Claysburg along Polecat Road near Dunnings Highway. The final land development plan for a 10,640 square foot building received conditional approval from Greenfield Township supervisors at their May 2 meeting. The company is still waiting for several permits, including water and sewer, and will also need a developer’s agreement with the township, but hopes to break ground as soon as June. A wavier to construct 35 parking spaces instead of the 43 required by ordinance was approved. Do...
Taxpayers in the Claysburg-Kimmel School District will see an increase, but only half of what it could have been. At its Wednesday, May 10 meeting, the Claysburg-Kimmel School Board voted to approve the 2023-24 proposed final budget with a 3-percent tax increase, half the 6 percent Act 1 allowable limit. The increase will cost households an average of $23 and is expected to raise about $93,000 in revenue for the district. The increase brings Greenfield Township's real estate taxes to 9.05...

In a three-game week, the Lady Dragon Softball team found crushing victories in their first two matchups against the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders and the Johnstown Lady Trojans with 15-0 victories over both, including a Senior Night victory over the Trojans. Against the Marauders, the Dragons jumped to an early lead as they normally do, scoring eight in the first inning, followed by one in the third, and six in the fourth to put...
When "play ball" was yelled for the first-time this season at People's Natural Gas Field, Tom Crownover began his 15th season working for the Altoona Curve. Crownover is passionate about his career with the team, but his journey to job fulfillment was not a typical one. Crownover lives with an intellectual disability. But thanks to the Employment Services division of Skills of Central PA, he was assisted in seeking a job to fit his needs. Crownover was supported through the process of applying,...
“How many mushrooms have you found, Rich?” a friend recently asked. “The usual – nearly none.” I went on to tell him I don’t have enough time to hunt mushrooms – correctly named morels – during the spring. Between fly-fishing for trout and trying to squeeze in some spring gobbler hunting, I just don’t have enough energy to look for morels. By the end of the first week of gobbler season, I’m exhausted from trying to burn the candle at both ends; and when the big evening fly hatches begin, I have to make a choice between turkey hunting and fly-fi...

After my son had tagged a 25-pound gobbler on last spring’s opening day of gobbler season, we unloaded our guns and began our trek back to his parked truck. Since his gobbler was so large and we had quite a distance to walk, I toted both of our shotguns. We hadn’t walked far along the base of the grass cliff where Bob had killed the big tom when we saw two gobblers sprint across the jeep trail we were on, heading up the cliff. “Come on, Dad. We’ve got to get up there where we can set up to call one in.” “I’m not climbing up there again. My leg...
The Lady Dragons continued their reign of victory with two more opponents squashed throughout the week. The Dragons faced the Penn Cambria Lady Panthers and the Bedford Lady Bisons and found 17-0 and 12-2 victories respectively. Against the Panthers, the Lady Dragons absolutely dominated, scoring seven right off the bat in the first inning, while adding four in the third and another six in the fourth for a run-rule victory. Lacey Lynn was the winning pitcher, recording six strikeouts and a mere one walk. Madison Kennedy had six RBIs, clearing...
The Dragon Baseball team faced two opponents this week: the Penn Cambria Panthers and the Bedford Bisons. A 15-5 victory over the Panthers and a 7-2 victory over the Bisons cemented the Dragons at a 12-2 record at the week’s end. Against the Panthers, the Dragons jumped to an early seven-run lead, scoring four in the first and three in the second. After scoring one in the third, the Panthers brought it to a two-point game in the top of the fifth before the Dragons responded with seven runs to take control of the game. Jeff Hoenstine hit a w...

After the losing streak, the Dragons came ready to play when facing the Bishop Carroll Huskies, scoring 12 in the first inning and adding another five in the second while shutting out the Huskies for a run-rule victory. Lacey Lyn...
After the Dragons hit a slump in the Curve Classic, they rebounded well, crushing all of their opponents in their next week of games. A 15-5 victory over the Chestnut Ridge Lions, 15-0 victory over the Bishop Carroll Huskies and 9-6 victory over the Westmont Hilltop Hilltoppers left the Dragons 3-0 for the week. Against the Lions, the Dragons jumped to an early lead right off the bat, scoring five in the first inning followed by seven in the second. Another one in the third and two more in the fourth finalized the Dragons’ scoring, while o...
Prior to the 2022 spring gobbler season, I had heard fewer gobblers on land to which I have access than I had heard for many years. This included both public and private lands. I had, however, heard regular gobbling on properties where I don't have permission to hunt. I had pretty much settled on a first-day hunt on a ridge where my son, Bob, has enjoyed frequent success. I figured he could call in one of the gobblers I'd been hearing there. However, the day before the season opened, a friend...

Occasionally someone will ask me what I was doing on a certain date. I laugh. “How am I supposed to remember that?” I wonder. “I generally can’t remember what I was doing yesterday.” However, I sometimes can recall something of importance. For instance, last spring I remember that I was hearing fewer gobblers hollering than usual before the season. Quite a few others, who are better hunters than I am, agreed that they were hearing fewer birds than usual. One thing that jogs my memory is leafing through my outdoor journals. For instance,...

In a three-game week, the Lady Dragons dominated their first two opponents, finding victories of 8-0 and 12-2 over the Somerset Lady Eagles and Westmont Hilltop Lady Hilltoppers respectively. However, finishing out the week, the Lady Dragons fell just short in the final moments of the game against the Forest Hills Lady Rangers, ending in a 5-4 loss. Against the Eagles, the Dragons’ defense was led by Madison Kennedy, who pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout. The Dragons’ eight runs were split throughout the game: two in the second inn...
