“New … And, Hopefully, Improved,” could be the marketing slogan if Claysburg-Kimmel High School decided to run an ad campaign touting its 2023 Bulldog football team. The Bulldogs will come out to a newly refurbished field when it opens the season on Friday against visiting Berlin Brothersvalley, with new head coach Chuck Kassick unleashing a new-style offense with a lot of new faces at the skill positions. That’s made for a lot of new optimism for a program trying to turn around a 1-9 campaign last fall. “I think this is the most amount of...
August is not at the top of the list of sportsmen’s favorite months. Eager bass fishermen are out making some good catches, and the few groundhog hunters who are still active are pursuing the “pasture grizzlies.” However, most sportsmen are in “sleep mode.” While in sleep mode, many sportsmen anticipate easing out of their torpor and into some active outdoor adventures. Probably the sportsmen who are most eagerly anticipating autumn are deer hunters, especially bow and crossbow hunters. Having acquired their special licenses, they are ready...
Panther Stadium in Loysburg came alive this past Thursday evening as the 2023 Panther Football team took the field for the annual Black and White game. The evening was full of activities showcasing the students of NBC who will soon be an integral part of the Friday night lights for the Northern Bedford County School district. The evening also showcased the new stadium lights that were installed at Panther Stadium this summer. These state of the art lights with color changing features were...
If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. The Northern Bedford County High School football team isn’t broke. With starters back at 19 positions, the Black Panthers are far from it, in fact. They look just like last year’s 11-1 squad. No. It seems if anything is going to be broken this year, it’s going to be the Panthers’ opposition. Two seasons removed from making the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals and 10 months away from a heartbreaking loss to Windber that denied it a return trip to states, Northern Bedford is setting a high bar for itself this season...
Friday night will mark one of the biggest football games in Claysburg-Kimmel history. It won't even matter whether the Bulldogs can upend powerhouse conference newcomer Berlin Brothersvalley or not. The Bulldogs are coming home. "I think that everyone is super excited," senior left guard-defensive end Ethan Claycomb said. "We have been waiting so long. "It's finally here." After a couple of years of running loose - driving 20 minutes up I-99 to play home games in Hollidaysburg - C-K finally will...

The Central Dragon Golf team kicked off its 2023 campaign last Thursday with a trip to the Happy Valley Invitational at Penn State's white course. The Dragons took home a second place finish out of 18 teams in the AA field with a team score of 309, finishing 3 strokes behind St. Joseph's Academy. Griffin Snowberger captured the individual championship, shooting a 1 under 71 and winning in a card off against West Shamokin's Alex Talmadge. Nick Baum finished in a tie for fourth place with a 73....
When you get to be a certain age (don’t ask me when), catching a bunch of fish becomes less important than it once was -- though you do want to catch some trout when fishing. Instead, you start to observe your surroundings, and sometimes you want to do things differently, just to fool around. During the past couple years, I have sometimes deviated from my usual fishing habits, just for the heck of it. Though I have not tried the popular new method of nymph-fishing called Euro nymphing, which its proponents say allows them to vacuum a stream b...

Not only will Monday, Aug. 14 mark the start of DMAP permit sales, it’s also when the third round of antlerless deer license sales begins. In Round 3, hunters who already have purchased two antlerless deer licenses may pick up a third for any Wildlife Management Unit where licenses remain. Sales of both third-round antlerless licenses and DMAP permits will begin at 8 a.m. at all locations where licenses are sold, including online. To date, seven of Pennsylvania’s 22 Wildlife Management Units are sold out of antlerless licenses, and add...
When in the outdoors, sportsmen observe various things. Let's start with some good things I have seen this year. Most sportsmen know ruffed grouse are having a rough time because of the devastating effects of West Nile Virus. Previous to this year, I had seen only one grouse in the past 10 years. I doubled that this year, which is not especially encouraging but is a slight improvement. The first of these grouse was one of the "tame" type the game commission wants people to report seeing so that...
Nick Baum of Roaring Spring won The College Prep series held at The Links at Gettysburg course on July 22 and 23. Baum was the leader through the first round, shooting two under through 10 holes. The back nine proved a little trickier, but he held his own finishing for a first-place tie shooting a 74. Day two was a tough battle between him and his two other teammates, but Baum ended up capturing the title. Baum finished the tournament with one eagle and four birdies. Baum took his chances when...
Spring Cove Jr. High Boys Basketball finished second in the nine-team 12u division of Hoopsfest. The team composed of (from left) Colby Gojmerac, Landyn Kasun, Brooks Decker and Kaemen Oakes finished with a 5-1 record. All four boys will be seventh graders this coming season at Spring Cove Middle School. The only loss of the day came to Chambersburg 21-19 in the finals. The HoopsFest 3-on-3 basketball tournament held each year on the 4th Saturday of July was always the largest fundraiser for...
My neighbor, Dr. Archie O. Logist, constantly evaluates my column. One recent afternoon he interrupted my lawn mowing to accost me. “Rich, you’re constantly criticizing the game commission. Don’t you have anything good to say about it?” “No. I once had great respect for the commission. But, it and its board members have pretty much thumbed their collective noses at sportsmen to satisfy non-sportsmen’s agendas. The list is extensive. “I have written about their disdain for sportsmen while catering to game hogs with their brown-and-dow...
Skunks are common animals, especially in town where they have many places to hide and where they have reliable food sources. They are beautiful animals with lovely fur coats. Unfortunately, they smell, well, like skunks. This past winter Donna had to let her little dog, Sage, out during the night to take care of “business.” However, after taking care of business, Sage was sprayed by a skunk before making it back into the house. Donna gathered some Dawn dishwashing liquid and other cleansers, and we de-scented the dog. Several rugs where we had...
Hundreds of basketball players and fans descended on Altoona Saturday for Hoopsfest. Two hundred teams from six states were entered in the three-on-three competition. This is the 21st year for the annual event. The first 19 years were in Tyrone. This year's theme was "Elevate." "HoopsFest continues to solidify its position as the go-to three-on-three basketball destination in the state," said Founder Jim Kilmartin. "We are thrilled that, for the second year in a row, downtown Altoona will...

Note: This article was originally printed in the May 29, 2008, edition of the Herald. It is being reprinted in honor of Williamsburg’s recent celebration of 125 years of graduates. Exactly 50 years to the day that the Blue Pirates’ baseball team won the Blair County League with a 6-1 victory over Hollidaysburg, Williamsburg school officials on Saturday, May 14, honored WHS’s “Triple Crown” winners from the 1957-58 school year. The day was also declared “Sam Fonzi Day” in Williamsburg. Mr. Fonzi was the coach of the football and baseball team...
HoopsFest, the largest outdoor 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Pennsylvania, is back again for its 21st year. This year’s tournament is scheduled for Saturday, July 22. Known for its excellence in youth and adult 3-on-3 basketball, HoopsFest attracts players from across Pennsylvania and nine other states. This year the speakers will match the excellence on the court. John James, an original member of Newsboys, is set to attend and speak along with Johnny Moore. John James joined the Newsboys as lead vocalist around 1985; he stayed with the News...

Dell has been training at Hoover Martial Arts Center for nearly 10 years having begun his study of the art at the age of 7. He completed a multi-day testing at the home school in Martinsburg consisting of not only physical technique requirements, but also a question-and-answer session, a written portion, and a thesis on the history of Okinawa...
When I was a young fisherman, the veterans of that long-ago time gradually began to accept me. After all, I was constantly on the stream and occasionally bumped into notable season-long fishermen like Michael “Pike” DiBartolome and Sam Lower, often bugging them about fishing strategies and times to be on the water. A few other “old timers” might not have always been truthful; but when DiBartolome or Lower told me something, it was trout-fishing gospel. One piece of advice these local legends shared more than once was to be on the water as soon...
Living on a farm outside of East Freedom is a young man who has recently contended for a national championship. His name is Aden Dively, and he is just 13 years old and is entering eighth grade at Spring Cove. Aden and his dad are enthusiastic bass fishermen. During the summer they fish for river smallmouths nearly every weekend on a catch-and-release basis. To say that they are successful is an understatement. In fact, Aden has landed smallies over 20 inches long. As if this weren't enough,...
Exploring the possibility of reintroducing American martens to Pennsylvania will include consideration of an additional public survey gauging residents’ opinions on the matter. The Pennsylvania Game Commission recently developed the draft “American Marten Reintroduction and Management Plan for Pennsylvania,” a long-term, 10-year strategy to translocate the species back to the state, then conduct comprehensive monitoring to evaluate that reintroduction. The Board of Commissioners tabled a proposal until the results of a soon-...
The Central girls tennis team held a tennis camp the week of June 19-23 for girls in the Spring Cove School District entering grades four through nine. The camp was run by new head coach Shaun Coppersmith and former head coach John Riley. Current high school team members Julia Ritchey, Ashlyn Renner, Brooklyn Coppersmith, Zoe Grill, Brooke Smith and Lila Kile assisted in camp as well. A total of 19 girls attended the camp. A second camp is planned for week of July 17-21. Participants lined up...
June 26 was the first day that Pennsylvania resident hunters could buy their first antlerless deer license for the 2023-24 hunting seasons. Many hunters figured this would be a good day to purchase their yearly hunting license as well. After an early morning of trout fishing, rather than trying to get a license online, I drove to Mill Hill Agway to buy a hunting license and a doe tag. I buy a doe tag for one reason: to finish off a wounded doe if I encounter one. What should have been a simple process turned out not to be. With the game...
The check will not be in the mail, and neither will a paper application or a twice-stamped pink envelope. Instead, hunters simply will buy their 2023-24 antlerless deer licenses wherever hunting licenses are sold. The new process for obtaining antlerless licenses, made possible by a new law that took effect earlier this year, went underway Monday, June 26 at 8 a.m., when antlerless deer licenses will be available alongside general hunting and furtaker licenses, and other licenses, permits and privileges. Deer Management Assistance Program...
The Sixth Annual Morrisons Cove Rotary Club and Dragon Pride Foundation Golf Outing was held on Friday, June 23, at Iron Masters Country Club. This winning partnership raised a profit of over $10,000 this year thanks to a long list of sponsors, golfers, and many volunteers. The golf outing was a four-person scramble format. Brent Baker Painting was the winning team with a score of 60 after a card off with Ray Camp VFW who also scored 60 and earned second place. Webber Associates took third...

When I use the word “skunked,” I am not referring to an incident of being sprayed by a skunk, although Donna and I endured an incident this past winter when her dog, Sage, was sprayed by a skunk in the middle of the night. Donna knew what to do, mixing a solution of Dawn dishwashing liquid with some other cleansers to get rid of the odor. It was not a pleasant night. Normally when I refer to being skunked, it means that I have failed to tag a turkey during a season or have failed to catch a trout during an outing. This happens more frequently t...
