Last week the Central Dragon golf team captured the PIAA District 6 AA Championship with a four stroke victory over St Joseph’s Academy. The Lady Dragon Soccer team faced the Cambria Heights Lady Highlanders this past week for a 2-0 shutout victory. Lakkyn Dibert bagged a penalty kick for the Dragons in the first half for an early lead. The penalty kick resulted from a Central corner kick that was entering the goal but blocked by a Highlander field player’s handball infraction, leaving Cambria Heights down a player for the remainder of the game. Labor Day weekend’s perfect weather allowed for the 28th annual Nelson D. Metzger Memorial Basketball Fundraiser to take place at the Down River Golf Course in Everett. This year’s scramble format tournament featured 116 participants, playing for prizes, fun and fellowship as Nelson Metzger’s memory was preserved and honored, once again. Saturday (Sept. 30) is the big day for crossbow and bow hunters, the day they have been dreaming about all summer. It is the opening day of the archery deer season. Bowhunters have been practicing with their equipment for months so that they can make competent, humane shots on deer. This past spring I wanted to take a photo of a special trout I had caught. After some maneuvering, the trout was in a perfect position for a photo, and I touched the camera button to get the photo. The Dragons started out in the first half behind by two scores but managed to tie the game in the second half. Caleb Peck scored at 47:03, assisted by Jacob Heuston. Then, shortly after, Robert Long-Yarrison scored at 56:40, assisted by Logan Hummel. This led to overtime, when both teams were left scoreless. I recently became aware of what I believed was a group of young, informally organized sportsmen called The Wallhangers. I am always impressed when young people become enthusiastic about fishing and hunting, and I wanted to know more about them. Because of a lack of available officials, Claysburg-Kimmel decided to move last week’s game with West Branch to Thursday. The Bulldogs rewarded Chuck Kassick with his first victory as their coach. Squirrel season’s Saturday start (Sept. 9) stirs up some interesting memories. The earliest of these are ones with my dad. When rabbit hunting went downhill and he closed his kennel of beagles, Dad decided to introduce me to hunting by chasing squirrels locally. We generally took two sporting arms: a .22 rifle for shots at stationary squirrels and a 20-gauge shotgun for shots at moving targets. Hunting for doves and resident Canada geese begins tomorrow (Sept. 1) in Pennsylvania. The dove season, consisting of a Sept. 1 through Nov. 24 segment and a later one from Dec. 19 through Jan, 6, 2024, allows hunters to kill 15 doves per day, with a possession limit of 45.
