Central's Hunter Smith rushed for 22 carries and 179 yards but it was not enough to overcome Hickory High School Friday....

  • Central's Undefeated Season Ends

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Nov 30, 2023

The Central Scarlet Dragon Football team faced the Hickory Hornets, the champion from District 10, and sadly came up short of a victory, suffering a 26-13 loss to end their season. The first half came with multiple interceptions by the Hickory defense, rendering the Dragon offense useless as their scoreboard was left at zero after the first half. On the other hand, one field goal in the first quarter and a touchdown in the second left the Hornets with a 10-point advantage. The Hornets scored...

  • Dragons Advance after Nail-Biting Victory

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Nov 22, 2023

In the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs, the Central Scarlet Dragon football team faced an opponent from earlier in their season, the Clearfield Bison. Earlier in the season, the Dragons had overcome the Bison with a score of 27-20, but this week told a different story. Despite receiving to start the game, the Dragons' running offensive drive was halted after four unsuccessful passing attempts led to a turnover on downs. The Bison responded with a touchdown to take the lead. The Drago...

  • Defense the Unsung Heroes of NB

    Nov 22, 2023

NB Panther Football's Facebook page had the following message after last week's game: "I couldn't be prouder of our kids. We were phenomenal on defense. Our kids gave everything they had and left it all on the field. This group of seniors was special. . . Thank you for the support, Panther Nation." Defensive players Adam Crooks/Noah Baker are shown above defending the end zone....

  • Are You Going?

    RICHARD TATE|Nov 22, 2023

A couple days ago, my neighbor, Dr. Archie O. Logist, professor of Phenomenology at the Ganister Technical Institute, posed a question to me that I had posed to some of my friends this fall. “Are you going to hunt deer this season?” he wondered. “With the game commission telling us that 33 percent of the deer they tested from our area were infected with CWD, you might be taking a chance of killing one that has it.” “But, the commission tells us that there has been no definite risk of people contracting CWD from eating meat from an infected...

  • Claysburg Native Inducted Into Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame

    ERIC SHIELDS, Correspondent|Nov 22, 2023

Claysburg native Dick Lingenfelter, along with 42 other Blair County natives who played semi-pro baseball were inducted into the National Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this month at the Blair County Convention Center. Lingenfelter began his baseball career, playing in The Blair County Twilight League in 1953. When the Twilight League disbanded, local Claysburg teams joined The Greater City League. He started out as a catcher, but quickly moved into the pitching position. During his...

  • 'Greatest Game' Joy Short-Lived

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Nov 22, 2023

The irony of having just won the greatest game he ever played and his teammates have ever experienced is that Hunter Smith isn't getting to really savor it like a slice of turkey with gravy and stuffing. Not yet, at least. It'll keep, like those Thanksgiving leftovers. "It was a big win, but you have to clear the slate. You're starting from zero again," said Smith, Central High School's all-state senior linebacker and standout running back, a day after he scored six touchdowns - including the ga...

  • NB's Perfect Season Ends in Hard-Fought Heartbreaker

    Nov 22, 2023

Northern Bedford Football went up against Steelton-Highspire last week and fell 21-7, despite a 0-0 score at halftime. In the photo above, coaches and seniors hug after the game ends. The Panthers had a perfect record this season. This team of players have been together since youth football and they are a close-knit group....

  • Dragon Football Crowned Quadfecta District Champions

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Nov 16, 2023

Returning to the District 6 AAA championship game for the fourth year in a row, the Central Scarlet Dragon Football team faced the Penn Cambria Panthers for a third consecutive year. After blowing out their opponents in years past, a much tighter game left the Dragons one score ahead at the final buzzer, earning a quadfecta for their season: four-time champions with a perfect season to match it. The Dragons received to open the game, working their way downfield to take the lead via a one-yard...

  • Lady Dragons Finish Successful Season

    Nov 16, 2023

The Lady Dragon Soccer team faced Shady Side Academy for a 2-0, season-ending loss. Overall, the Dragons had impeccable defensive strategy and effort, but when the offensive opportunities showed themselves, fell just short. The Dragons' 14-8 season tied the school record for the farthest the girls' soccer team has gone. Despite the devastating loss, the future is bright for the team, losing only one Senior: Goalkeeper Lacey Ripka. Some very big shoes of an important position are open to be...

  • Rifle Bear Season Begins Saturday

    RICHARD TATE|Nov 16, 2023

The four-day rifle season for bear hunting begins on Saturday (Nov. 18). Although the PGC has de-emphasized the importance of this traditional hunting season by establishing various other bear-hunting seasons, the four-day hunt is still anticipated by numerous groups of enthusiastic bear hunters. Last year only 1,051 of the total harvest of 3,170 bears were killed during the four-day hunt. Archery and muzzleloader/special rifle seasons prior to the regular season accounted for 1,451 bruins. The extended rifle season during deer season...

  • Central Football to be Tested by Clearfield for a Second Time

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Nov 16, 2023

Central was pushed to the limit last week, the Scarlet Dragons needing Jacob Benton’s 15-yard touchdown pass from Eli Muthler with 32 seconds left to get past Penn Cambria for the Scarlet Dragons’ fourth District 6 Class 3A football championship in a row. Coach Dave Baker and the Dragons are thinking that just might have been the perfect tune-up for what’s to come, though, as they’ll now get a rematch with Clearfield in the District 5-6-9 Class 3A finals on Friday night at E.J. Mansell Stadium in DuBois. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. “It brin...

  • NB Putting It On The Line Against Defending State Champ

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Nov 16, 2023

Between a first-game injury and just not playing much because his Northern Bedford High School football team was getting so far out in front in winning all of its games, Black Panther senior running back Adam Johnson hasn't had a lot of opportunities to get untracked and pile up a lot of rushing yards this season before he broke loose for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns in last week's 27-7 District 5 Class 1A championship win over Windber. It only took Johnson 14 carries as he surpassed the 1...

  • Cove Champions Clinch District Titles

    Nov 16, 2023

Two Cove teams fought for champion crowns this weekend and came out on top. Northern Bedford defeated Windber at Somerset for the District 5 Champion title on Nov. 9. The Panthers (below) remain undefeated at a 12-0 record. Central won its fourth District 6 championship against Penn Cambria on Friday, Nov. 10. The Dragons also maintained a perfect record this season. Above, with the score tied at 28, Penn Cambria's Carter McDermott attempts to strip the ball away from Central's Jacob Benton in...

  • In the Mud

    RICHARD TATe, The Sportsmans Corner|Nov 9, 2023

Shortly before autumn turkey season, I was fishing on a local stream. I had taken two rods along: one to fish a section of riffled water while using a favorite nymph imitation; the other, a lighter rod, was equipped with a dry-fly to fish smoother sections of the creek. I did not carry both rods at once. I left one in my locked Ranger while using the other. This was a pretty good plan. I was catching some elusive wild brown trout at each of my stops. One – if I might brag – was 20 inches long. It’s pretty hard to have things “go south...

  • Area Cross Country Stars Succeed at States

    Nov 9, 2023

The PIAA Cross Country State Championships took place on Saturday, Nov. 4. Runners traveled to Hershey for the event. Central Sophomore Lanee Berkhimer placed 7th overall with a finish time of 19:56 in the 1A race. Last year, as a freshman, Berkhimer landed the 10th place spot at the state championships. Central's Braden Allison competed in the boys 2A race and placed 165th. Northern Bedford's Savanna Hershberger placed 37th with a time of 21:16 in the 1A race. This is the senior's third year...

  • Lady Dragons Triumphs in Shootout Victory

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Nov 9, 2023

The Dragons continued their playoff run with a 2-0 victory over the Forest Hills Lady Rangers early in the week. This led to the Dragons facing the Bedford Lady Bison in the District 5/6 Championship match, where Central took home a 5-4 shootout victory. The Dragons’ two goals against the Rangers both came from Carli Hart, scoring once at the beginning of each half with an assist from Kira Trexler each time. The offensive-intensive game left the Dragons with possession of the ball for 64 percent of the game, and 23 attempted shots. Against t...

  • Panthers to Fight For District 5 Title

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Nov 9, 2023

Northern Bedford will face defending champion Windber tonight for the District 5 Class 1A football championship in a reprise of last year's final. To hear Black Panther quarterback Eion Snider tell it, there's no one he and his teammates would rather be playing. "Everyone's been talking about it," Snider said. "We're going to play hard. They took a district championship away from us so we can't be four-time district champions. It's going to play a really big factor." The 11-0 Panthers and 8-3 Ra...

  • Dragons Come Off Bye Into D6 Game

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Nov 9, 2023

By going a perfect 10-0 in the regular season, Central earned a day off last week, the Scarlet Dragons getting a bye in the District 6 football playoffs because Somerset chose not to enter the postseason. All things considered, Dragons coach Dave Baker would rather have played. Who wants to change it up when things are going well? "I've always felt you're better off having a game," Baker said. "The team will develop better because the kids are more interested and it's a better situation." While...

  • Eating Crow

    RICHARD TATE|Nov 2, 2023

Last week I related how my son, Bob, and our friend “Scout” tagged turkeys on last autumn’s opening Saturday. I, on the other hand, had to try to do as much hunting during the one-week season as I could if I were not to “eat crow” for Thanksgiving. Monday found me back at the location where Bob and Scout had downed their birds. There was no activity. Just about the time I had decided to start to cover some ground, it began to rain. I hustled out of the woods and was home by 9:00, drying my soaked clothes -- and the new shotgun Bob had bought fo...

  • Lady Dragon Soccer Crushes Eagles

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Nov 2, 2023

In the playoff opener for the Lady Dragon Soccer team, they faced the Somerset Lady Eagles. After holding a lead for the entire game, the Lady Dragons finished with a score of 3-1. After Lakkyn Dibert scored a goal in the first half, assisted by Leya Hazenstab, this lead would continue for the duration of the half. Kira Trexler scored twice in the second half, once assisted by Addison Long and another unassisted for a 3-0 Dragon lead. The Eagles scored a singular goal at the very end of the...

  • Dragons Dominate in LHAC Championship

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Nov 2, 2023

In a battle of the unbeaten teams, the Central Dragons squared off against the Richland Rams for what was meant to be a battle of epic proportions. However, with the Rams suffering a number of injuries, the Dragons dominated the matchup, crushing their opponents with a score of 43-15. Without a doubt, the Dragons had an astounding game, possibly the best of their season whilst finishing their undefeated regular season and celebrating their Senior Night. This truly showed in the first half,...

Claysburg-Kimmel's Remington Diehl picks up yardage before being forced out of bounds by Everett's Marcellus Alban Friday. Claysburg's Ava Dibert (3) goes up for a block against Purchase Line's Emilee Buterbaugh in a home match Tuesday, Oct. 24....

  • Hornets, Williamsburg Players Head into Playoffs

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Nov 2, 2023

Lucas Dick won’t try to snow you. Juniata Valley’s junior wide receiver-cornerback, who’s been such a big-play machine for the Green Hornets, is anxious for this week’s District 6 Class 1A playoff game against 2022 finalist Penns Manor at A.R. Simpkins Memorial Field on Friday night at 7 p.m. “I’m a little nervous because I’ve never started in a playoff game,” Dick said, “but I think we should be fine.” Dick isn’t the only one in that boat as the Hornets embark on what they hope will be their fourth district football championship and firs...

  • Hollidaysburg Serving up the Special

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Oct 26, 2023

Homer DeLattre was the special teams captain when he played football at Lock Haven University, so it warmed his heart when years and years ago he saw his son, Caden, picking up innately where his old man left off. “In the backyard, we’d be playing catch,” the elder DeLattre said with a chuckle. “The next thing you know, he’s turned around, snapping it between his legs.” Special teams isn’t just all in the family now that DeLattre is a high school head coach. His Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers take that aspect of the game very seriously. Th...

  • Dragon Football Pulls Ahead in Nail-Biting Victory

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Oct 26, 2023

Facing one of their toughest opponents yet, the Dragons were happy to return to their home field after their past three away games. Against the Clearfield Bison, some second-half struggles from the Dragons led to a nail-biter in which the Dragons narrowly pulled ahead for a 27-21 victory. The Dragons received to open the game, moving downfield quickly to score with a four-yard reception by Jack Dunn. The Dragons regained possession and scored once again in the second quarter with another 17-yard...

In their final matches of the year, the Lady Dragon Volleyball team faced the Northern Bedford County Lady Panthers for their Senior Night at home and then traveled to face the Bald Eagle Area Lady Eagles. The Dragons found a 4-1 victory in their home match but were defeated in their final game 3-0. Against the Northern Bedford County Lady Panthers, a tough first set left the Dragons down a set after a 27-25 score. However, the Dragons bounced back quickly, winning the next three to secure the...

  • Bob's 2022 Fall Turkey

    RICHARD TATE|Oct 26, 2023

Prior to last year’s one-week fall turkey season, I had scouted several locations, hoping to line up a flock for opening day. Though I failed to put any birds “to bed” the evening prior to the opener, I knew where a couple flocks were hanging out. Bob, my son, whose job prevents him from doing much scouting, agreed that a flock frequenting a section of game lands was probably our best bet for opening day. We were set up at dawn on a ridge where grapevines were loaded with fruit and where there had been good turkey scratching (places where...

  • 9-0 Dragons Sticking to the Course for More Success

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Oct 26, 2023

Central High School senior Baron Dionis wants to come out on top Friday night for the most elemental of reasons. Sure, it’d be nice to win the league, to go into the playoffs with momentum, but it’s so much simpler than that. “I don’t want to lose any games this season,” Dionis said, “to be perfectly honest with you.” Dionis and his Scarlet Dragons will put their unblemished record on the line as Central hosts Richland in a clash of the last two remaining undefeated high school football teams in District 6 in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conf...

  • Dragon Football Downs Bisons With Second-Half Domination

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Oct 19, 2023

The Central Dragon Football team traveled to face the Bedford Bisons last week for their eighth week of the regular season. After a very slow first half, the Dragons took off on both offense and defense to end with a 42-7 victory. After the Dragons kicked off to the Bisons to start the game, possession of the ball drifted between the two for a scoreless first quarter. The Dragons then scored early in the second quarter with a 30-yard touchdown reception by Jacob Benton to take a small lead. With a little more than a minute remaining in the...

  • Lady Dragon Soccer Falls in Close Matches

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Oct 19, 2023

The Lady Dragon Soccer team faced both the Tyrone Lady Golden Eagles and the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders in the prior week, falling to both with scores of 2-1 and 3-2 respectively. Against the Golden Eagles, the Dragons started with the lead after Kira Trexler scored in the first half, assisted by Leya Hazenstab. Sadly, in the second half, the Eagles scored two goals less than a minute apart to create a deficit that the Dragons couldn't come back from. The Dragons faced a similar fate in their match against the Marauders. After a pair of...

  • A Couple of PGC Items

    RICHARD TATE|Oct 19, 2023

My email inbox was recently bombarded with emails regarding a raid by the state legislature on the PGC’s Game Fund. An amendment to House Bill 1300 was approved by the State Senate that would transfer $150 million from the Game Fund to the state’s Clean Stream Fund. Proponents of this move said the money would come from the PGC’s pool of $525 million in unspent oil and gas reserve money. After the Senate had approved this move, it went back to the House for concurrence. At first this sounded like a reasonable move to assist in cleaning the C...

  • Lady Dragons Go 50/50

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Oct 19, 2023

Their loss came against the Hollidaysburg Lady Tigers with a score of 3-0, while their victory came over the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders with a score of 3-0 as well. Against the Tigers, the Dragons had a slow night and sadly took a loss in all three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-12. Kaitlyn Weitzel had four kills and four aces, while Amber Shade had five assists. Against the Marauders, howev...

  • Dunn and the Dragons: Central Senior Eager For Friday's Homecoming Clash Against Clearfield

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Oct 19, 2023

Central High School Senior Jack Dunn isn’t surprised his Scarlet Dragons are undefeated through eight games this year. After, last season, when he was part of the record-setting PIAA Class 3A semifinalist Dragons’ scout team, he was facing competition as tough as anything he’d see when he got to be a starter himself. “It was fun practicing against them. There was no one better,” Dunn said energetically. “Iron sharpens iron.” Dunn and the Dragons will get a test worthy of that preparation this week when they welcome East Section 1 champion Clea...

  • Pennsylvania Bear Seasons Hold Promise

    Oct 12, 2023

If you hunt Pennsylvania black bears, maybe for years without harvesting one, now is not the time to give up hope. It’s true the odds of tagging a bear can seem long. Only somewhere between 1.5 percent and 2.5 percent of bear license holders get a bear in any given year. But bears are again plentiful and widespread across Pennsylvania, with an estimated 15,000 roaming the woods. The 2023 seasons are long and varied, offering lots of opportunities, including hunting on three Sundays. And history shows there’s always reason for optimism. In 202...

  • Numerous Seasons To Open Saturday

    RICHARD TATE|Oct 12, 2023

Numerous hunting seasons open this Saturday (Oct. 14). At one time only small game seasons would come in on Saturday; but the PGC has expanded deer seasons, and one of them begins on Saturday. This is the statewide muzzleloader season. Only antlerless deer are legal during the one-week hunt that ends on Oct. 21. A special firearms season for antlerless deer begins in midweek, on Oct. 19. It also ends on the 21. This firearms season is for junior and senior license holders, mentored license holders, active-duty military members, and persons...

Seniors Zach Oakes and Nick Baum each carded an 8...

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Oct 12, 2023

After amassing a 28-0 halftime score on a cold and rainy night against the Penns Valley Rams, the second half was entirely scoreless for the Dragons. Defense was enough, however, to keep the Rams' score to a mere 14 points, ending the game with a winning score of 28-14 for Central. Midway through the first quarter, the Dragons began their first-half triumph with a 19-yard touchdown reception by Jack Dunn. A two-point conversion with a pass from Hunter Smith to Troy Butler left the score at 8-0 f...

With such a young football team, this season has been a learning experience for Juniata Valley, but the Green Hornets have been ahead of the curve, winning five of six outings. Still, each week is one of discovery. Last game, Coach Bill Musser found out how his Hornets would respond to a reality-check loss at West Branch, and they answered with a last-minute win over Moshannon Valley. This week, they’ll uncover more about themselves when they go on the road to play another Inter-County Conference North Division foe, Mount Union. “What we’ll fin...
