Today, Pennsylvania’s wildlife faces a variety of threats. These threats often are related to both natural and human-caused factors. As the state agency responsible for managing Pennsylvania’s wildlife, the Pennsylvania Game Commission must mitigate these threats whenever possible. Diseases like Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), mange and tuberculous have the potential to significantly affect wildlife populations. Though these diseases do spread naturally, their spread is increased significantly when wildlife is unnaturally concentrated. When peo...
I have been fly-fishing for trout for a little more than 50 years. After I had graduated from high school, I thought I would try to become a serious trout fisherman. When I saw Ralph Haney and his son Randy fly-fishing one evening, I thought that fly-fishing might be a good way for me to learn to catch trout. My dad had dabbled in fly-fishing at one time and had a box of flies that I used to start out. In addition, Dad knew some of the basic materials I needed to have, and he advised me to pick...

The recent audit of the Pennsylvania Game Commission's financial policies has pointed out that the Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania (USP) has long been correct about the commission's manipulation of figures. Pressure from the USP was crucial for initiating the audit. To support the USP, which supports hunters, you can join for one year by mailing a $20.00 check to USP Membership, 530 4th Avenue, Sutersville, PA 15083. To many other sportsmen, this audit demonstrates that the PGC is either...
If you haven’t yet purchased your 2019-20 Pennsylvania hunting license, now might be the time. The new license year began on Monday, July 1, so only 2019-20 licenses are valid when hunting or using Game Commission shooting ranges. And sales of 2019-20 antlerless deer licenses are about to begin, and only hunters holding valid general licenses may apply. Pennsylvania residents are given preference in applying for antlerless licenses, and resident hunters may apply for their first antlerless licenses beginning Monday, July 8. Nonresidents may s...

While range permits now are available anywhere hunting licenses are sold, those buying them online can continue to print them at home. To buy your 2019-20 shooting range permit online, visit The...

With heavy rains blowing out my favorite local streams for much of the spring, I've gotten little fly-fishing in. For a while, though, several spots on the BFO River remained fishable. One drizzly afternoon before the BFO was blown out, too, I'd hiked to the top of a pool where I'd been having some success. I'd just sat down on a log to wait for some flies to hatch when I heard voices: two guys in separate one-man pontoon boats were anchored at the head of the pool. I heard the first one say,...

I am determined that I am not going to buy a new pair of chest waders or a new pair of hip boots this year. I am going to make do with what I have lying around. I had five pairs of chest waders stashed in various places in my garage and cellar. Of these, one is a lightweight pair of stocking-foot waders that I like to use when fishing large streams. The wading boots I wear with them are equipped with studs and provide traction when I am wading on slippery rocks in deep or fast water. I bought...
Since last year, 123 additional free-ranging deer have tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Pennsylvania, and Disease Management Areas 2 and 3 have been expanded again as a result of new cases. With CWD testing from the 2018 deer seasons now completed, there now have been a total of 250 known CWD cases in free-ranging deer in Pennsylvania since 2012. New CWD cases were detected in the following counties: Bedford (65), Blair (10), Cambria (2), Franklin (3), Fulton (33), Huntingdon (4), Jefferson (1), Juniata (1), Perry (1), and...
Pennsylvania hunters had a perfect safety record in the recently completed 2019 spring turkey season. No hunting-related shooting incidents were reported to the Game Commission during the month-long season. While years ago, it was common for hundreds of incidents to occur in a year, the total has dipped to about a couple dozen, thanks in part to the requirement for all first-time license buyers to complete a Hunter-Trapper Education training course. Administering the course wouldn’t be possible without a dedicated team of Hunter-Trapper E...
The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners has scheduled a public, working group meeting for Monday, June 24, at the Game Commission’s headquarters in Harrisburg. The meeting is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. Working group meetings allow for an exchange between the Board of Game Commissioners and Game Commission staff ahead of regular quarterly meetings. The 2019 campaign for the Claysburg-Kimmel girls softball team ended in heart-breaking fashion on June 6 at Mount Aloysius College, Cresson. C-K, the two-time defending District 6 Class 1A champions, battled District 9 champion DuBois Central Catholic in a PIAA quarterfinal matchup. The Lady Bulldogs squandered a 5-2 lead and eventually fell 6-5 in nine innings. C-K, which knocked off DCC in last year's quarterfinals en route to the semifinals, finished this season with a 20-5 record. DCC has...
June 17 is the first day to buy hunting licenses for the 2019-00 hunting seasons. It will be interesting to see how many additional hunters drop out of hunting because of the PGC's short-sighted policies. If I didn't already have a lifetime license, I don't know whether I would spend the money on a Pennsylvania license, though turkey hunting would probably keep me in the license-buying fold. I am concerned about the future of wild-turkey hunting. The population of birds has shrunk throughout...
Licenses for the 2019-20 hunting and furtaking seasons go on sale Monday, June 17. And when hunters and furtakers buy their 2019-20 licenses, each again will receive a complimentary copy of the Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest. Like other hunters and trappers, seniors still need to purchase bear licenses to pursue bruins and obtain permits to harvest bobcats, fishers or river otters. Hunters who acquired their senior lifetime licenses after May 13, 2017 are required to obtain an annual pheasant permit to hunt or harvest pheasants. A compl...

On Monday, June 3, C-K earned its 20th win of the season in 24 games with an 11-7 victory over...
I am sometimes asked how to dry the gristle attached to the beard of a gobbler that a hunter probably wants to save as a memento of a successful hunt. At one time I dipped the gristle of the beard into a small pile of salt to dry it. This was messy. I now pour a small pile of baby powder onto a small piece of paper and dip the gristle into this pile. I then prop the beard's gristle against the pile of baby powder for several days, perhaps dipping the gristle into the pile again. It takes only a...
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is seeking public comment on proposed changes to fishing tackle regulations along a section of Spruce Creek located in Huntingdon County. At its next meeting on July 15 and 16, the board will consider a proposal to add Spruce Creek, Section 03 to its Catch-and-Release All Tackle Program. This designation would allow anglers to use any form of tackle, including both artificial lures and live bait, to catch fish and release them immediately. Public comment on this proposal will be accepted through June...

The sophomore miler ran a 4:24.19 in Friday's preliminary round to qualify for the finals and break his own school record. He went one step further on Saturday in the state championship race, hanging with a large pack of runners for most of the race he made a move with several others on the backstretch...

Today marks the third straight year that the two teams have met for the district title. Glendale won in 2017 while C-K won last year. The Inter-County Conference North Division rivals split their two regular-season games this season. The Lady Bulldogs defeated No. 6 Williamsburg 6-4 and second-seeded...
One cloudy May afternoon 30 years ago, I had arrived home early from work and had zoomed out to the creek, hoping for a "Sulphur Day." A Sulphur Day is one when yellow-colored mayflies hatch during cool, often drizzly afternoons for several hours when it takes them longer than usual to fly off the surface of the stream from which they are hatching. This makes them easy pickings for hungry trout. That is just what happened that afternoon. In fact, there were more flies hatching than I had ever...

The 2019 baseball campaign at Claysburg-Kimmel High School came to a close on May 20. Battling No. 3 Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic in a District 6 Class 2A quarterfinal game, the sixth-seeded Bulldogs managed just one hit during their 2-0 setback. The loss snapped C-K’s eight-game winning streak, and the Bulldogs finished 14-7. C-K’s lone hit was a leadoff single by Kobe Harr on the game’s first pitch. BG scored its two runs in the bottom of the first inning, one on a wild pitch and one on an RBI single. Corey Chamberlain, who took the loss, pitch...
The Northern Bedford High School baseball team suffered a 4-1 loss to Rockwood in a first-round District 5 Class 1A playoff game. NBC BOYS Northern Bedford’s boys’ track and field squad added to its impressive 2019 resume with a runner-up finish at the PIAA District 5 Championship Meet held on May 15 on the NBC track. The Panthers scored 84 points, 15 behind District 5 champion Bedford and two points ahead of Chestnut Ridge to claim second place in the team race. “I did not anticipate us finishing that high,” NBC head coach Jeff Batzel said. “I had us around 70 points and third or fourth overall, which means we had a lot of athletes score higher than their seedings which...

Pennsylvania’s 2019-20 migratory game bird seasons have been set. Annual migratory game bird seasons are selected by states from frameworks established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Game Commission selections were made after reviewing last year’s season results, population survey data and public input. There are three significant changes to Pennsylvania waterfowl seasons this year, said Game Management Division Chief Ian Gregg. Two of these changes were required by USFWS season frameworks, Gregg said. They are a reduced dai...

Uzelac Gymnastics has facilities in Duncansville and Johnstown. Kennedy, 16, a sophomore at Central High School in Martinsburg, is the daughter of Doug and...
Wednesday, May 1, was the fourth day of this year’s gobbler season. I had accompanied my son, Bob, on the windy opening morning and had helped turn around a 21-pound gobbler with a 10-inch beard that he shot. On Tuesday morning, I had been bested by a couple of gobblers that wouldn’t cross a deep hollow to investigate my calling. However, I figured I’d set up across the hollow on Wednesday, coming in to it from a different direction. I’d risen long before dawn and had hiked to the spot in the dark. I had just settled in under a large tree wh...
Spring gobbler hunters are reluctant to give up spots where they hunt. After all, it's tough enough to tag a tom without having large numbers of other hunters trying to call to a gobbler you are working. Old-school trout fishermen often have a couple of secret spots tucked away where they can consistently land some nice fish without interference from other anglers. It would take a medieval torture chamber to make these anglers reveal where these hot spots are located. However, turkey hunters'...

The foursome’s winning time was 8:43.77. Zimmerman was the first NB athlete to win an MVP award at this prestigious meet since Taylor Crawford won the award on the...

Like this year's spring weather, last spring's was generally not proper for effective fly-fishing for trout. However, when weather and water conditions were appropriate, I hit the water with mixed results. In addition, the spring turkeys were effectively humiliating me; and by May 10 I was pretty much becoming a zombie from a lack of sleep, hunting during the mornings and fly-fishing later in the day when I could. Weather gurus kept telling us that the next several days were going to drop...
