“Helen, it’s time to get up,” said Ted, her dad. “We should eat our breakfast and then get out to the creek. I think I know a good spot for us to fish.” Ten-year-old Helen was excited. This was going to be her first trout-fishing experience. Ted had taken her fishing in ponds for sunfish, and she knew how to operate her small spincast fishing outfit. In addition, he had bought her a voluntary youth fishing license, and he had placed his own required license and trout stamp in a license holder. Making sure they had packed all their gear in the b...

Quick – name one thing associated with Williamsburg and wrestling. Up until last weekend, the words of Williamsburg and wrestling didn’t necessarily go together. Enter Williamsburg High School Senior Andrew McMonagle. McMonagle is the son of Dan and Tracy McMonagle and has two brothers, Austin and Aden, a sister Alexi, and a niece, Millie, and a nephew, Ellis. McMonagle’s father, Dan, encouraged him to try out the sport of basketball at a young age, and according to McMonagle, “I just didn’t...
Another PGC Controversy. Not long ago, I was directed to google “Spotlight PA” on the Internet and look for an article by Angela Couloumbis called “Former top Pa. Lawmaker’s lobbying firm paid $41K by Game Commission in unusual arrangement.” The article reports that the game commission hired Allegheny Strategy Partners at $10,000 per month to do lobbying work for it with the state legislature. “One of the three partners in the firm is Joe Scarnati of Jefferson County who held the top leadership post in the State Senate for more than a deca...

Dively wins again. Claysburg is the home of a good many serious sportsmen. Among these is ninth-grade student Aiden Dively. He is the most recent of a line of champion turkey callers hailing from the Claysburg area, continuing the success enjoyed by the Chamberlain family and others. During the weekend of February 16-17, Dively competed in the Junior Grand National Turkey Calling Contest at the convention of the National Wild Turkey Federation held in Nashville, Tenn. His grandfather, Ralph Baker of Roaring Spring, emailed a video of...

In the District Six 4A Championship match, the Central Scarlet Dragons were put up against the Johnstown Trojans, a team they had lost to twice before in the season. The game started off great for the Dragons, who nabbed a 9-4 lead with a little over four minutes left in the first quarter. By the end of the quarter, the Dragons led by three. The second quarter brought 11 points from both teams, keeping the Dragons lead with a 22-19 halftime score. But things fell apart for the Dragons in the...

Regular readers of this column know I am concerned with fishing and hunting ethics and sportsmanship. I have little interest in fishing and hunting contests that award prizes for catching fish or killing game animals. One notable exception is bass-fishing tournaments that promote the live release of the fish after they are measured. This brings us to organized coyote hunts. According to the Jan. 19 issue of “Pennsylvania Outdoor News,” more than two-dozen coyote hunts were held in Pennsylvania during the past winter. The largest of these and...

I am not one of the great financial wizards of our time. However, I think I understand enough about finances to know that the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) is sitting on a pile of money. For years, the commission lobbied the legislature to approve a license fee increase. However, that is something the commission did not need. The following comes from the February 2024 “Pennsylvania Game News.” License fees accounted for only 9 percent of the PGC’s income during the 2022-23 fiscal year. A whopping 73 percent was obtained through Natur...

The Central Scarlet Dragon Basketball team faced the Juniata Indians at home last week for the District Six 4A semi-finals. With their 67-43 victory, the Dragons will advance to the championship for the third year in a row. Against the Indians, the Dragons’ fast-paced offense coupled with their defensive pressure made for an excellent game. The Dragons led by seven after the first quarter, and after making a few more shots in the second, led at halftime with a 32-14 advantage. Despite the I...

The Lady Dragon Basketball team traveled to face the River Valley Lady Panthers in the District Six AAA playoff opener. Unfortunately, the Dragons were forced out of their rhythm and ended the match in a loss via a score of 58-29. As the Dragons prepared to give extra attention on defense to the Panthers star player, the other members of their opponents unexpectantly knocked down quite a few shots. This left the Dragons trailing 25-7 after the first quarter, and after making some adjustments to combat their opponents, the Dragons lost the...

Dave Baker never had a plan. Not when he took a job as a biology teacher at Williamsburg Community High School right out of IUP in 1967 and wanted to coach a sport, any sport at any level, just to stay involved in athletics. Not when he finally acquiesced to taking over as the Blue Pirates varsity football coach four years later, when Williamsburg was struggling to find someone to replace Jerry Campbell. Not when he applied to succeed A.J. Hoenstine and guide Central back in 2011. And certainly not in 2001, when, after 30 years leading...

In the last match of the regular season, the Lady Dragons faced the Bellefonte Lady Red Raiders at home. The Dragons dominated throughout the entire match, ending with a 62-24 victory. The Dragons started the game off strong, outscoring their opponents by 10 in the first quarter, then followed up with an 11-point advantage in the second quarter’s scoring for a 33-12 halftime lead. The second half brought much of the same for the Lady Dragons, who outscored their opponents by seven and 10 in the third and fourth quarters respectively. Megan D...
After playing in their last regular season game against the Bellefonte Red Raiders and finding a 47-38 victory, the Dragons traveled to face the Johnstown Trojans to open the LHAC playoffs. The Dragons, however, did not come away with a victory, and lost 49-23. Against the Red Raiders, a slow start befell the Dragons. The score was tied at seven after the first quarter, but the Dragons started to get into a rhythm in the second quarter, as their 22-14 halftime lead showed. The Dragons tied scoring in the third quarter with their opponents, and...
The Pa. Game Commission is asking for the public’s help finding turkey flocks to trap for ongoing turkey projects. Pennsylvanians are encouraged to report the location of any turkey flocks they see. Information is being collected online at https://pgcdatacollection.pa.gov/TurkeyBroodSurvey through March 15. Visitors to that webpage will be asked to provide the date of the sighting, the location, and the type of land (public, private or unknown) where birds are seen, among other things. Game Commission crews will visit sites to assess them f...
Over the years many people have asked me if I go ice fishing. “Nope,” I reply. “Ice fishing’s past the point of being a normal sportsman’s activity.” I let it end like that. I do not tell my questioners that I sometimes go fly-fishing during the winter – which is also a little off the wall. I do not make winter fly-fishing adventures nearly as often as I did 25 years ago. In those days I regularly sandwiched fly-fishing adventures between cross-country skiing outings. But, with global warming – less snow, with the type of snow we now get clin...

On Jan. 27, 2024, the Board of Commissioners of the Pennsylvania Game Commission held its meeting to set preliminary upcoming hunting seasons and bag limits. In a recent email, sportsmen’s advocate Greg Levengood shared some of the meeting’s highlights. One of main interest to sportsmen concerned the reintroduction of the American marten, a small predator, to the Pennsylvania woods. Sportsmen are concerned about the potential damage this small weasel could do to the ruffed grouse population and to other wildlife populations as well. Lev...
In a week with a singular match against the Penns Valley Lady Rams, the Lady Dragons rallied after a tie game to push for a 38-33 victory. After the first quarter, the score was tied at seven. However, in the second quarter, the Dragons outscored their opponents 11-4 in order to attain a 18-11 halftime lead. In both the third and fourth quarters, the Rams were able to score one point more than the Dragons, but the Dragons kept up their offensive game and ended the match in a victory. Megan Diehl led the offensive effort for the Dragons with 14...
In a week with a singular match, the Dragons traveled to face the Penns Valley Rams. A less-than-stellar effort from the Dragons led to overtime, in which the Dragons finally picked things up, ending with a 56-48 victory. The first quarter left the Dragons with a two-point lead, and a similar second quarter left the halftime score at 18-14 in favor of the Dragons. In the third, the Dragons matched the Ram’s scoring, but in the fourth, the Rams were able to put up enough points in the final minutes to tie the game 42-42. Once in overtime, h...
As some sportsmen had predicted, the Pennsylvania bear harvest continued its downward slide this past season – or should I say seasons. The preliminary figures show that Pennsylvania hunters killed 2,919 bears, the first time the harvest has shrunk under 3,000 since 2007. Hunters killed about 1,243 bears during the archery, muzzleloader, and special firearms seasons. Only 1,083 were downed during the traditional four-day firearms season and 593 were tagged during the extended season. This is down from 4,653 bears killed in 2019. S...
In a three-match week, the Dragons found victories over the Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils and the Clearfield Bison with respective scores of 48-28 and 46-38. After those final two home games of the regular season, the Dragons traveled to face the Westmont Hilltop Hilltoppers and fell 57-53. A slow start befell the Dragons in their home rematch against the Blue Devils. After leading by a mere point after the first quarter, the Dragons kickstarted things to attain a 21-14 halftime lead. The Dragons held their opponents to single-digit scoring per...

The Lady Dragons had two matches this past week against the Clearfield Lady Bison and the Westmont Hilltop Lady Hilltoppers. The Dragons did not come out on top in either match, losing 65-54 and 54-26 respectively. Against the Bison, the Dragons trailed by four after the first quarter, but put together a huge second quarter to take a 26-23 halftime lead. Despite 10 points from the Dragons in the third, the Bison scored 26, which was followed by a fairly even final quarter for the Dragons’ defeat. Megan Diehl led the Dragons with 13 points. T...
