  • Hunters Harvest 89 Elk in 1 Week

    Nov 14, 2019

Ninety-eight hunters took part in Pennsylvania’s 2019 one-week general elk hunt, which closed Nov. 9. Most left elk country with a trophy. Eighty-nine elk were taken by hunters during the season. And for those licensed to hunt antlered elk, also known as bulls, the success rate was 100 percent, with 27 of 27 tags filled. Successful hunters within 24 hours of harvest are required to bring their elk to a check station, where tissue samples are collected to test for chronic wasting disease, brucellosis, and tuberculosis. To date none of these d...

Not long ago, I wrote that the passage of a bill allowing Sunday hunting was unlikely. I am now eating crow about that column. On Oct. 30, SB 147 was passed by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives without debate by a 144-54 vote. It took a couple compromises to reverse the fortune of the bill that had seemed unlikely to pass. One of these is that hunters will have to secure written permission from landowners to hunt on private properties on Sundays. The fines for violating the provision wil...

Last fall, my son, Bob, and I did not get to hunt together during the autumn turkey season. Because of the heavy rain that occurred on the first day, I did not hunt. Bob, like our friend "Scout," spent a fruitless day hunting in the inclement weather. During the couple of evenings he got out during the first week, he was unable to run down any turkeys. On the Saturday ending the first week of the season, Bob made a long-hike hunt on one of his favorite game lands. "I didn't even see a scratch,"...

  • Game Commission: Additional Sun. Hunting Won't Happen Next Year

    Nov 7, 2019

Passing the state House of Representatives Oct. 29 by a 144-54 vote, legislation that would provide expanded Sunday hunting opportunities in Pennsylvania appears likely to become law soon. But the Pennsylvania Game Commission wants hunters to know Senate Bill 147 has not been passed in final form yet, and even if it passes the state Senate a second time and is signed into law, it will not take effect until 90 days after passage. That means the bill, which would permit hunting on three Sundays – one within the archery deer season, one within t...

  • Dragons' Rally Falls Short Against BEA

    Nov 7, 2019

The 2019 football season came to a close last Friday night, Nov. 1, for the Central Scarlet Dragons, but not before the Dragons gave top-seeded Bald Eagle Area all they could handle. Playing at BEA’s home field, Central, seeded fourth, led early in the contest and was in position to pull the upset in the final minutes before falling short 21-19. The loss ended the Dragons’ season with a 4-7 record. After playing most of the opening quarter scoreless, the Dragons scored on an 8-yard pass play from Jeff Hoenstine to Hunter Klotz. Last fall, my autumn turkey season did not begin until Monday afternoon of the first week – the only week in WMA 4A. It rained cats and dogs on Saturday and continued through Monday morning. As an old retired guy who despises hunting in the rain, I sat it out until the rain ended. On Monday afternoon, I took a short hike to a knob where I had found some turkey scratching near a grapevine tangle before the season. I sat and called till nearly dark; but if any turkeys were nearby, they did not a...

  • Hollidaysburg Blitzes Dragons, 34-2

    Oct 31, 2019

The Central Dragon football team traveled to Hollidaysburg last Friday to battle its District 6 Class 5A neighbor and came up on the wrong side of a 34-2 final. But after a Dragon turnover, the Tigers struck quickly for a score and led 7-2 after the opening quarter. Central was able to move the ball throughout the game but had trouble sustaining th...

  • Turkey Season

    Oct 31, 2019

Two consecutive light fall wild turkey harvests and a substantial statewide turkey population of 212,000 birds should provide plenty of action in the upcoming fall turkey hunting season, which opens Saturday, Nov. 2 in most Wildlife Management Units. The most significant change in the coming fall turkey season is that a regulatory change now eliminates the requirement for fall turkey hunters to wear fluorescent orange material. It also applies to archery deer hunters throughout their six-week season....

  • Newly Detected CWD-Positive Deer Will Expand DMA 4

    Oct 31, 2019

A captive-raised deer that recently tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) will result in a southward expansion of Disease Management Area 4 (DMA 4) in 2020. The exact adjusted boundary for DMA 4 will not be announced until next year, after the close of hunting seasons and completion of further CWD surveillance. But the new CWD-positive deer will place most of Lancaster County within DMA 4. Even though DMA 4 will not expand until next year, the Game Commission is asking for hunters’ help now. Hunters who harvest deer in Lancaster C...

At nearly 70, I am no longer one of the "junior" players and find it increasingly difficult to keep up with the younger players. A couple weeks ago, we played five competitive games in two hours. After showering and washing my basketball clothes, I planned to hit the glider on the front...
