As I walked into the Williamsburg High School gymnasium recently for a boys' District 6-A semi-final playoff game, showcasing Saltsburg and the Blue Pirates, it was my privilege to run into an old friend and fellow WHS "alum," Ed Allender (1955). I had an immediate flashback to the 1954-55 Juniata Valley League championship team that Ed made a major contribution to. Interestingly, the "Allender" family lived directly across the street from the front entrance to the high school, an easy commute...
After 45 years of marriage, I have learned when my presence is not needed around the house. Such was the case one hot August evening when Donna was having a meeting at our house for one of the committees of the Williamsburg Women's Civic Club. I realized that I'd better make myself scarce. For years I have been mumbling about gathering some old bass-fishing gear and heading off to the "big river" below Huntingdon to catch some smallmouth bass. I have not used this gear in more than 30 years, tho...
Metzler Bros. Transportation Inc. won the Spring Cove Youth Baseball League minor division championship on Saturday, Aug. 8, with a 7-2 victory over Keith Electrical Services. Metzler Bros. finished the season with a record of 16 wins, two losses and one tie. Metzler Bros. Transportation Inc. also gathered more than 2,000 food items, which lead all minor division teams, in the collection of league's canned food drive for the Roaring Spring Food Pantry. Between the Major and Minor divisions,...
Although it seems odd to me, Pennsylvania's autumn hunting seasons open next Tuesday, Sept. 1. One of the hunting targets will be mourning doves, which may be hunted from one-half hour before sunrise till one-half hour after sunset. The season runs till Nov.27 and then resumes from Dec. 18 until Jan. 2. When my son was young, we tried hunting for doves several times; and unlike me Bob could hit them. I have never harvested a dove. The limit is 15 per day, with a possession limit of 45 birds. Ano...
On Saturday, July 25, the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners reviewed and approved the newest form of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Chronic Wasting Disease response plan. Following the initial review period of September 2019 through February 2020, the Game Commission issued a revised response plan in the spring of 2020 for a second round of public review. All told, the Commission received 885 comments on the plan from the public, agencies and organizations. These were incorporated into the final version of the plan. “Development of...

While the 2020 Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Elk Expo has been canceled due to COVID-19, hunters still can go online Aug. 15 to watch live as the names of those drawing 2020-21 Pennsylvania elk licenses are announced. The Pennsylvania Game Commission’s live coverage of the awarding of 2020-21 elk licenses is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15 on the agency’s Facebook page. The announcement of elk-license recipients will begin soon afterward. While elk-license applicants often are eager to see if they’ve been selected for their...
When I am fishing, I occasionally encounter unusual things that have nothing to do with my fly-fishing adventures. One of the weirdest outdoor encounters I have had recently was finding a little mole trying to get himself out of an in-stream patch of dirty gunk that must once have been foam. Since moles live underground and are basically blind, this little guy had no idea how to extricate himself from the morass. I had an easy solution to his problem. I removed my landing net from my vest, slid...
Summer is supposed to be the season of plenty in the wild. Young animals that have been born during the recent spring are growing and are becoming aware of the world around them. By now, whitetail fawns are beginning to venture into fields where they are visible. These charismatic animals give you a fuzzy feeling when you spot them on evening rides. However, things are not always easy and pleasant for wild creatures. Summer can be a time of cruel death as well. For instance, along any road you d...
I have a friend we'll call "John Doe" who owns a nice outdoor property. John keeps a few trout in a small pond there. However, by this spring the population was down to one large palomino (yes, I know it's actually a golden rainbow). During the dry weather the pond was drying up. John knew he'd have to move the trout out of the pond if it were to survive. Recently he asked me if I'd help him get the palomino to the Big Spring in town. "Yes," I agreed in front of my new pastor, Matt Roberts. "I'l...
WHVL-TV, Central Pennsylvania’s first station to televise live local high school football, on July 16 announced its 2020 Game of the Week schedule. WHVL will televise 10 action-packed games this fall each Friday at 7 p.m. throughout the regular season. The season kicks off on Friday, Aug. 28, when Bellwood-Antis meets rival Tyrone in the 82nd edition of the Backyard Brawl at Gray Veterans Memorial Field. This will be the second year in a row the Game of the Week has televised this great central Pennsylvania rivalry. Bellwood-Antis pulled out a...
To hunt turkeys the way I do, I must be in good physical condition. At 70 it has become increasingly difficult to remain in the type of condition I need to be in so that I can pursue wild turkeys over several miles of difficult ground during an autumn day of hunting. When the Y was still able to host morning basketball for players 60 and over, I got a good workout two days a week while trying to chase other players around the court. The ageless Galen Bickel from Altoona really forced me to work...

By now, most hunters have purchased their licenses for the 2020-21 hunting year. Many have bought additional tags and stamps so that they can hunt with a bow, crossbow, or muzzleloader for deer. In addition, pheasant-hunting enthusiasts have plunked down an extra fee so that they can pursue stocked ringnecks. More than 100,000 hunters will likely have bought a license so that they can hunt for bears during one of the many seasons that will be available to pursue Pennsylvania's bruins. The...
This is Krush Softball 18U that placed second in the Class C Championship tournament in Chambersburg on June 27 and 28, 2020. The players are from Altoona, Hollidaysburg and surrounding areas. The annual Golf Outing held by the Central Pa. Football Coaches Association was conducted on Sunday, July 12, at the Huntingdon Country Club. It was the biggest turnout in 20 years. Of the 80 golfers, the format was broken down into two flights. The winners were from Juniata Valley, edging out a group from the Altoona Mirror and Huntingdon. Steve Taylor, Mike Galloway, Tim Kessling and Joe Friday won by one stroke over their rivals. Second place fell to Mike Boytom, Doug Davino (Altoona Mirror), Dave Fyock and Ed Strickler (from Huntingdon). In...
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will hold its quarterly business meeting on Monday, July 20, beginning at 10 .a.m. Due to the continued public health concerns related to COVID-19, the meeting will be held online with Commissioners and PFBC staff participating remotely. The public may view a live stream of the meeting by visiting online at www.facebook.com/PaFishandBoat. Because this meeting is being held in a virtual format, the process for accepting public comment will be different than an in-person gathering. Public comments...
The term "sartorial splendor" means "magnificent in the manner of dress." In relation to fishing, sartorial splendor could mean that an angler dresses himself so that he looks magnificent to other anglers. When I am out fishing, especially when I visit the BFO (big, famous, overfished) River, I often encounter other fly-fishermen who look like they are models for fly-fishing catalogues. These guys wear the latest in brand-name breathable waders, even on smaller creeks. Underneath their waders I...
If you haven’t yet purchased your 2020-21 Pennsylvania hunting license, now might be the time. The new license year began July 1, meaning new licenses are required when hunting. And without a 2020-21 general license, hunters are unable to apply for 2020-21 antlerless deer licenses, which will go on sale soon. Pennsylvania residents are given preference in applying for antlerless deer licenses, and resident hunters may apply for their first antlerless licenses beginning Monday, July 13. Nonresidents may submit their first applications a week l...

The Disease Management Area 2, which accounted for 200 of last year’s new cases of CWD, is now approximately 7,470 square miles. That’s up from 6,715 last year. It expanded west into Westmoreland County as the result of a CWD-positive adult doe struck by a vehicle, northwest into Cambria and Indiana counties as the result of CWD-positive captive deer facilities, and north into Centre County and Mifflin, Union, and Snyder counties as the result of two CWD-positive adult bucks picked up as roadkills. DMA 2 now covers all or portions of Ind...
We are now in the period of summer when catching trout becomes a matter of degree. No, I am not talking about the degree of difficulty, though summer trout are much tougher to deal with than the trout of the early season are. By now, trout have seen just about every kind of live bait, spinning lure, and fly imaginable. The fortunate trout that have been caught and released, perhaps more than once, have become wise regarding the wiles of fishermen and often examine a fisherman's wares critically...
Colby Gojmerac of Metzler Brothers Transportation hit his first over-the-fence home run in a 10-6 win over Cove Lumber on Saturday night, June 27. The special significance is that it is believed that Colby is one of the youngest, if not the youngest, player to hit a home run during a kid pitch game with the Spring Cove Youth Baseball League. Colby is entering the fourth grade at Martinsburg Elementary and is only 9 years and 4 months old....
Each summer, Pennsylvanians help track wild turkey populations by reporting their turkey sightings to the Game Commission. And once again this year, they’ll have two months instead of one to make observations and report them. The Pennsylvania Wild Turkey Sighting Survey, which until 2019 ran the month of August, again opened July 1 and will run through August. The two-month window follows the current national standard used by all state wildlife agencies, providing comparable data across the wild turkey’s entire range. Turkey sighting rep...
With expanded Sunday hunting for big game and an archery deer season that reaches deeper than ever into the whitetail rut, 2020 is sure to be a historic year for hunting in Pennsylvania. And seizing those opportunities is only a license purchase away. Licenses for the 2020-21 hunting and furtaking seasons went on sale Monday, June 22. Like other hunters and trappers, seniors still need to purchase bear licenses to pursue bruins and obtain permits to harvest bobcats, fishers or river otters. Hunters who acquired their senior lifetime licenses...
The Jeff Ayers Memorial Game was played on Saturday, June 20, at the Martinsburg Little League field. The Ayers family gifted SCYBL with a donation this year in memory of Jeff and his love of the game. The funds were used to replace the concession stand roof and additional improvements. Pictures from the game featuring True Value and D. Merl Tipton VFW include (clockwise, from top): Matt Steele watches as Lora Ayers throws out the first pitch Saturday evening on the first weekend of the Spring...
"You're just an old fogey, Rich," the young fly-fisherman told me. "You need to get up to date on modern fly-fishing tactics." The young man's comment was made to me not too long ago when we were discussing nymph-fishing techniques. He had told me that his nymphs' effectiveness was more than doubled by dipping his nymphs in a solution of scent. "Why don't you just use live bait?" I blurted out. "That's what you're making your nymphs by dipping them into that gunk." "Ah, Rich, you're out of the l...
May is my favorite month. Redbud and dogwood come into full bloom against the pastel green of developing plants. Eventually ground phlox and dame's rocket make their lavender appearances as well. As the month advances, things warm up; and the month produces some of the nicest days of the year. One May day not too long ago demonstrates why I often become zombie-like before the end of the month. There are so many things to try to squeeze in that May often presents an "embarrassment of riches." I...
The Wolf Administration on June 10 issued preliminary guidance for high school and recreational sports teams to resume voluntary workouts and other in-person activities in the state’s yellow and green phases. The guidance includes college and professional sports. “Pennsylvania has some of the best athletes and teams in the country and they can now begin to safely return to organized sports,” said Gov. Tom Wolf. Gov. Wolf said this guidance balances keeping student athletes safe from COVID-19 while allowing them to participate in an impor...
With the coronavirus closing many things down, including age-level basketball at the Y, I find that I still have lots of things to do. So should most sportsmen. Enthusiastic trout fishermen have been on the water since April 7. The PFBC opened the season 11 days early to try to mitigate the crowded conditions that usually accompany the opening day. I have been on the water frequently since then with mixed results. I would say that the fly-fishing has ranged from fair to average most of the...
Central High School senior Braden Kitt recently announced that he plans to continue his athletic career at the collegiate level. He will attend Lock Haven University in the fall, and has been contacted by LHU's basketball coach who has offered him a spot on the university's basketball team. Braden, the son of William and Jessica Kitt of Roaring Spring, said he plans to major in education at LHU. "My father played football at LHU, so that definitely makes playing a sport here a lot more special...
Central High School of Martinsburg is noted for having a long history with softball. It all starts with the Spring Cove Youth League. From the tie die shirts to the crazy socks and pigtails where the girls start making memories and improving their skills in the game. After the summer leagues they move to junior high and then onto varsity softball. Some decide to branch out to travel ball teams while the others are content with just school ball. When we got the word that the 2020 season was not going to happen due to the coronavirus outbreak,...
