Hosting Tyrone on Jan. 20 in its home opener, the Central High School boys' basketball team fell behind early and was never able to catch up during a 63-51 setback. Playing Tyrone for the second time in as many games this season (Tyrone won, 72-65, on Jan. 11), the Dragons trailed 20-12 after one quarter and 36-19 at halftime. CHS won the second half by a 32-27 margin. "I thought our kids battled, especially in the second half," Central coach Paul Frederick said. "We had a lot of guys step up...
Fourteen 3-pointers were not enough to help the Claysburg-Kimmel High School boys' basketball team in its season opener Jan. 20. Host Tussey Mountain rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to sneak past the Bulldogs, 54-52. C-K had a 36-28 halftime advantage, but the Titans had a 26-16 scoring edge in the final 16 minutes. "It was our first game – we were nervous, "C-K coach Mike Harris said. "However, we had too many turnovers down the stretch. We aren't very big, and Tussey killed us on...
Northern Bedford started the 2021 boys’ basketball season very differently than they ended the 2020 season in a 68-39 romp over visiting Bellwood-Antis on Jan. 19. After a season-ending loss in the 2020 playoffs in which the Panthers defense was basically non-existent, Coach Randy Meck vowed to change his teams mindset. “We’ve stressed defense non-stop and tried to make this team more defensive minded,” Meck said. “At least for tonight it looks as if that’s paid good dividends.” It was the Panther offense that got off to a fast start as NB r...
Landowners could get two additional months to apply to enroll their properties in the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP). The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners on Jan. 23 voted preliminarily to extend the annual application deadline from May 1 to July 1. Many DMAP landowners consider the May 1 application deadline too early because it does not allow adequate time to collect post-winter data, analyze it and incorporate those findings into their applications. A later deadline would allow landowners more time to prepare and submit...
"Rich, you need to a column about littering. There's more trash around in the outdoors than I have seen in years," Donna told me during a recent walk with her dog on the rail trail. "Yes, dear. But, you know my writing about it doesn't do any good. The pigs who throw their junk out along roads or in obscure places probably aren't the ones who read my column." The most recent event that had Donna fired up was that a local man who is nearly our age was cleaning up a mess along the local rail...
The Central High School boys' basketball team opened its long-awaited 2020-21 season Jan. 11 at Mountain League-rival Tyrone, only to return with a 72-65 setback. The second quarter proved to play a critical role in the Dragons' loss, as Tyrone dominated the period with a 20-9 scoring advantage. Central outscored the host team 56-52 in the other three quarters. "I thought it was a well-played game for a season opener," Central coach Paul Frederick said. "Both teams took care of the ball and...
Winter is often not conducive for effective fly-fishing for trout. Howling winds and freezing temperatures make outings uncomfortable, and cold water temperatures often inhibit the activity of the fish. Many fly-fishermen sink back into rocking chairs near their wood burners and settle in with some winter reading. Winter reading can help them prepare for the upcoming season. Hundreds of fly-fishing books are available in bookstores, fly shops, or online that will help an angler devise tactics...

In the season opener for both teams, the Lady Pirates earned a 55-25 victory. See story and additional photos in the Jan. 28 edition of the Herald....
York native Rikk Coleman said that he decided that Altoona was the "perfect spot" for a new professional basketball team because of the community's love for the game. Also important was that the city is far enough from the bigger cities like Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, where there is more competition from other pro sports teams. "It is an area where I can bring a professional sports team and give the people the entertainment that you can get at this type of event," Coleman said. Coleman said...
The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners will hold its first meeting of 2021 on Saturday, Jan. 23. Those wishing to submit comments for the board to consider can do so in one of two ways. Comments can be sent...
Disrupted last year by the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual sale of tree and shrub seedlings from the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Howard Nursery will return in 2021 stronger than ever. Seedlings that would have been dug up and shipped out last spring were left to grow another year after the 2020’s seedling sale was canceled. In some cases, that means the nursery will be offering larger, more-resilient seedlings in this year’s sale with a wide variety of seedlings available – 20 species in all. The 2021 seedling order form is available online....
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is seeking applicants for a new grant program that will provide financial assistance to marine fisheries participants negatively affected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Pennsylvania CARES Fisheries Relief Grant Program is made possible by the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act (Public Law 116-136). Section 12005 of the CARES Act directed the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide financial assistance to commercial and charter fishery...

The Central High School boys' basketball team was the first sports team in the Morrisons Cove area to start the 2020-21 winter season. The Dragons played at Tyrone on Monday night, Jan. 11. Above, Tyrone's Brandon Lucas (right) collides with Central's Devon Boyles on a fast-break pass to Boyles. The host Golden Eagles hung on for a 72-65 win....
One morning in mid-December, Amber, my granddaughter, was driving along Route 866 on her way to her final morning classes in Johnstown. When she spotted a dead bear lying along the road, she called me. "You ought to go out and see it. It's not damaged too badly." So, Donna; Sage, her dog; and I hopped into my old Ranger. Five minutes later we were looking at the dead bear. It was relatively small but not a cub. I snapped a photo of it and talked about it with a couple other sportsmen who...
The Claysburg-Kimmel School Board at a Dec. 22 meeting awarded a contract for the demolition of the home-side bleachers at Bulldog Stadium. School directors awarded the $$14,600 project to Dirt Works by Johnston, East Freedom. Work will begin as soon as all of the district's demolition permits are in place. The district will replace the bleachers as part of phase one of the C-K High School Athletic Improvement plan. Also during the meeting, the board appointed Dena Burket to the position of...

Proverbs 21:20 (KJV) says that "a fool and his money are soon parted." I suppose the same can be said about sportsmen. Sportsmen seem to need the latest gadgets and gear that are developed for our favorite pastimes. Deer hunters stock up on the latest scents and odor-free clothing that might help them put tags on whitetails. Turkey hunters collect all sorts of turkey calls to trick even the most reticent of gobblers. Fly-fishermen need the best feathers to construct their flies and the most...
"Rich, aren't you going to write up what you did this past year in the outdoors?" a sportsman asked me recently at a local store. "I know you didn't write about how things went in 2019." It's humbling to know that some people pay attention to what I write. Anyhow, here are a few items from the pandemic year. During 2020 I noticed more than ever that my age (71) is catching up with me. This was especially evident during May when I was trying to burn the candle at both ends – attempting to r...
Both good and bad events occurred during the past rifle deer season. Let's begin with one of the good things. My friend Brady built a number of deer stands two summers ago. Mine is a "Taj Mahal," though I had him build it in a poor location. However, he is smarter than I am and chose a good spot to build one for himself. For the second consecutive year he downed a nice buck from his stand. While he and I were tugging it uphill, my son arrived just when we needed his help. Bob pulled Brady's...
Prior to Gov. Tom Wolf's shutdown of non-essential business through Jan. 4, Morrisons Cove Memorial Park was hosting a vibrant and well-attended youth Basketball league. This season, 158 children in kindergarten through sixth grade registered for the league and clinics, which began on Nov. 10. In the photo above, children on the "red" and "white" teams play a league contest recently....
I was interested to read the article "Never the Same Again" in the December 2020 "Pennsylvania Game News." The author, Associate Editor Joe Kosack, takes us through the past 20 years of deer management from the Pennsylvania Game Commission's perspective. Kosack lauds the management decisions made by PGC biologist Gary Alt and his successors. Kosack praises Alt's team's promotion of concurrent season and antler restrictions. He concludes that Alt and his team "made deer hunting better for...
The Wolf Administration recently released a report detailing coordinated efforts of state and federal agencies and Pennsylvania research institutions to combat Chronic Wasting Disease, or CWD, a contagious, fatal disease that threatens deer. The report outlines the status of the disease in Pennsylvania, as well as the work in progress to offer testing and other services to hunters, help deer farmers maintain their livelihoods, and diminish disease spread and environmental impact. “CWD threatens one of Pennsylvania’s prized natural res...
Alex Zychowski, 12, of Coraopolis, shot his first deer, a 10-point, Saturday, Nov. 28, while hunting with his uncle Shawn Blackie. Alex is the son of Rob and Noel Zychowski, formerly of Roaring Spring. He is the grandson of Dennis and Penny Igou of Roaring Spring....
While hunting is often challenging, bagging the perfect gift for the hunters in your life is as easy as placing a phone call or visiting the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s website. Among gifts available from the Game Commission this holiday season is Penn’s Woods Passages, a newly released book by renowned wildlife artist and author Bob Sopchick. The more than 300-page book contains an exceptional blend of Sopchick’s inspiring columns and artwork that appeared over the years in the Game Commission’s long-running monthly magazine, Pennsyl...
Several weeks ago, on Nov. 25, 2020, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced its decision to deny a permit for the proposed Pebble Mine in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act. In a statement, Army Corps Alaska District Commander, Col. Damon Delarose, said the mine would be "contrary to the public interest" because "it does not comply with Clean Water Act guidelines." This decision has the potential to end a...
When people my age (71) fall down, we can suffer serious long-term consequences. I believed that I was immune to falling down and hurting myself, though I am glad that my son, Bob, bought me a wading staff for fishing, since I often slip and slide around while fishing big streams. However, I didn't think I needed a walking stick to maneuver on uneven ground in the woods. Well, live and learn. On Oct. 30 I had accompanied Bob on a turkey-scouting mission. We hoped to put a flock of birds "to bed"...
During a time when more people than ever are looking for fun and affordable ways to enjoy the outdoors by themselves, or safely with family and friends, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) reminds anglers that 2021 fishing licenses are now on sale! Anna Jolynn Smith, 16-year-old at Northern Bedford High School, shot her first buck Tuesday, Nov 30, with Jeffrey Snyder, who has been taking her hunting for the past five years. Anna used a 270 rifle with a high powered scope to drop this 4-point buck at 250 yards away. Anna gutted, skinned and butchered the buck herself. She plans on making alot of jerky with the meat and getting the head done in a European mount. Anna was the youngest contestant in The Cove's Got Talent and Little Miss...
With vibrant, changing foliage as a colorful backdrop to any adventure during the fall season, the lure of a relaxing paddle along a scenic river, stream, or lake is hard to resist. To ensure that boaters return home safely, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) reminds boaters to always wear a life jacket. Through April 30, boaters are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket at all times while underway or at anchor on boats less than 16 feet in length or on any kayak, canoe, or paddleboard. The requirement applies...

My son, Bob, has killed quite a few bucks during his 28 years of hunting. The best of these was a perfect 10-point that he downed a couple years ago. Each tine was perfectly matched with one on the opposite antler beam, and there were no chips or broken points on the rack. It was a beautiful buck. A few years prior to that, he downed an eight-point whose rack had a wider spread than the 10-point's, but the tines were not as evenly matched. Though these bucks and others he has killed mean a...
Pennsylvania’s upcoming firearms deer season will start with a bang. For the first time in the Game Commission’s history, deer hunters will have a Saturday-Sunday opening weekend. Hunters in 10 Wildlife Management Units also will have concurrent antlered/antlerless hunting throughout the 14-day firearms deer season. The firearms season also packs another new twist that will generate excitement afield. It’s a regulatory change that allows hunters to attempt to harvest a second deer before tagging the first, so long as they have the appro...
Turnovers and a staunch Redbank Valley defense were too much to overcome as NBC was defeated, 28-15, in the PIAA Class A football playoffs Nov. 7 at Windber Stadium. Five turnovers proved costly as Redbank Valley rolled to a 21-0 halftime lead. That cushion proved to be too much to overcome. The Bulldogs capitalized on a fumble recovery and an interception in the first six minutes to get a quick 14-0 jump on the Panthers. Redbank Valley added another post-turnover touchdown before the halftime b...
The Williamsburg High School football team erupted for 52 points in what turned out to be its final game of the season Nov. 6. The visiting Blue Pirates stormed out to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 52-7 win over Mount Union. Williamsburg improved to 5-4 while Mount Union slipped to 3-2. Senior Tyler Clark had a big night for the Blue Pirates, running for 113 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. Junior Lambert Palmer completed 10 of his 13 pass attempts for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Wes McCall caught seven passes for 87...
Bowhunters in Pennsylvania have made history. The first-ever day of regulated Sunday big-game hunting was on Sunday, Nov. 15, for archery deer hunting only. In total, there are three Sundays – all in consecutive weeks – when limited big-game hunting will occur in 2020. Sunday, Nov. 22, is open for bear hunting during the statewide general bear season, and Sunday, Nov. 29 is open for deer hunting during the firearms deer season. On those three Sundays, hunters on private land are required to carry written permission from the landowner. Ple...
