We sportsmen pretty much merely exist during the coldest months of the year. Though fish can be caught during the winter, it is much more comfortable to sit near a woodburner and read about fishing. We also take the time to tinker with our gear; but in reality, it does not take too long to clean our rods, reels, and other equipment or to replace items that have seen better days. Spin fishermen can spend some of their winter days making lures that they will toss to fish during the upcoming season...

Over the years most of us have experienced having to change flat tires on our fishing and hunting trucks. I've changed a couple in the dark. Changing a flat tire is no big deal. Having it repaired later for a nominal fee is a minor inconvenience. This wasn't true of my Ranger's latest flat. The evening before I had to change the tire, the flat tire indicator on my dashboard lit up. The next morning I strolled out to the garage and found the flat. I couldn't change it in the bay where the Ranger...

I guess I slowed down more in 2021 than I had during any other year. Assorted aches and pains have made fishing and hunting much more difficult than they were just a couple years ago. Hunting: Reality has struck. I would not have tagged either a turkey or a buck if it hadn't been for my son, Bob. We got to hunt together late on the Friday at the end of the only week of fall turkey season. We hadn't hunted together until that day. I vacillated about going out on the opening Saturday because it...

I used to think I wanted to own property where I could hunt without having to worry about safety or intruders. A couple incidents from this past deer season have made me realize that I might be fortunate not to own any land. On the opening day of deer season, a landowner was sitting in a stand on his own, posted property. Suddenly, BANG! A shot rang out from behind him. He turned to find two outlaws. One had shot a small deer after jumping out of a vehicle. He illegally shot from the road into...

Last spring I wrote a column about "young lions" who are becoming dedicated sportsmen. In that column I mentioned two teenagers from my church who have been successful in their outdoor pursuits. During this past deer season, they "struck" again. Kara Lansberry is among Williamsburg High School's most remarkable athletes. She is a terrific softball player who has dedicated much time and energy to her favorite athletic activity. She is also a successful sportsperson. This past fall during archery...

Regular readers of "The Sportsman's Corner" know that I have great respect for outdoor conservation officers. These readers also know I believe sportsmen should adhere to the rules promoting good sportsmanship. They also know I believe some rules need to be enforced with discretion. Sometimes an officer is overly zealous while enforcing the letter of the law and actually could gain more respect for his agency by using some common sense. I once included in this column an incident involving two...
