Thor William Wentz, 63, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, at Virginia Beach General Hospital while surfing near his home. He passed doing what he loved most, and for that, his family is profoundly grateful.
Thor was born Sept. 1, 1961, at the Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan, the eldest son of James E. and Charmaine M. Wentz.
His father's Navy career took the family to various places across the United States, including Virginia Beach, Va .; Madison, Wis .; Fairfax, Va .; and eventually back to Virginia Beach, where Thor would spend much of his life.
He was the beloved grandson of William and Pearl Wentz of Roaring Spring. A 1979 graduate of Cox High School in Virginia Beach, Thor enlisted in the United States Coast Guard shortly after graduation. During his distinguished 27-year career, he rose to the rank of Chief Aviation Survival Technician, excelling as a highly respected rescue swimmer. His dedication to saving lives and his leadership earned him the admiration of his peers and community.
Thor had a deep passion for adventure and travel. He loved surfing, snowboarding, cycling, and spending time outdoors. The ocean was central to his life, and he continually sought new ways to challenge himself physically and mentally. Thor was a regular participant and notable finisher in the national Iron Man athletic competitions.
On Sept. 15, 1985, Thor married Karen Marie Jones, and together they navigated the life of a Coast Guard family with duty stations in Florida, California, North Carolina, and Massachusetts.
After their marriage ended, Thor was stationed in Los Angeles and Elizabeth City, NC. Thor cherished his role as a father to their two children: Teagan Layne Wentz, born Aug. 15, 1996, and Colin Dane Wentz, born Aug. 9, 2001. Both children survive him and carry forward his legacy.
After retiring from the Coast Guard in 2014, Thor settled in Virginia Beach, where he met Jacqueline Fang. They married Oct. 11, 2018, and shared a loving, adventurous life together. Thor also welcomed Jacqueline's daughter, Sofia, into his family with open arms.
In addition to his children, Thor is survived by his wife Jacqueline; his brother Kyle of Virginia Beach; and his father Captain James E. Wentz, USN (Ret) of McLean, Va.
Thor was a competitive athlete, excelling in Ironman competitions while on active duty. After retirement, his passion for fitness continued through cycling, swimming, and marathons. His unwavering drive and discipline were an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held for Thor at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25 at Fort Story Chapel (600 Atlantic Ave. Fort Story, VA 23459). Condolences may be left online at http://www.altmeyerfh.com.
