I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” is a familiar song this time of year. St. John’s United Church of Christ at 117 East Julian St. will ring their church bells and all the churches in the area are invited to join in at 10 a.m. on Christmas Day and ring out the good news of the birth of the Christ Child. For five minutes, the glorious sound of bells will help us all to stop and worship the King....

This ministry provides clean, seasonally...
In the Luke passage a father has two sons and multiple servants. Servants work for wages. That is what is expected. They have no permanent place in the household. They are not part of the family. The owner does not consult them in decision making. He does not share his hopes or dreams with them. If the owner dies, the servants do not inherit. But in the normal/correct home, the sons (adult sons) are consulted about decisions, the owner does share his hopes and dreams with his sons. If he dies,...
I have the privilege of having a small role in a community theater Christmas play this year. I have worked with most of the men and women in the cast before and consider them my friends, although I have little in common with most of them. I like being part of the group because it gives me a chance to be in a world far different than what I am used to. It allows me to be a testimony among those who think, talk, and live much differently than I do. I am sure I will refer to the play at times in up...
I wish we could sit at our dining room table and do Bible Study together. We have had quite a number of these over the years. I think sitting around the table is a great place and way to work at understanding the unfolding of God’s Word. I also like small groups because folks are freer to share. We are into the pre-Christmas Season. My “Thoughts” for the Herald are due. I often look at the personalities involved in the Christmas Story, those in the immediate portion of the Story and those who l...
This week we are blessed to celebrate Thanksgiving. As you read this, it is likely that your house may be filling with the smells of roasting turkey and pumpkin pie. If not, go to the New Enterprise Church of the Brethren and pick up a To-Go meal between 11am-1pm on Thanksgiving. This is a day that no one should go without. There are other churches and places that are hosting meals as well and they would love nothing more than to share a Thanksgiving blessing of food. Go get’cha some! There is s...
Bob Yoder of Martinsburg passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, at home at age 87. Folks of Martinsburg Mennonite Church had many things to say about this beloved friend, teacher, mentor, leader and much more. Pastor Joe Furry said, “Bob was a friend, a mentor, and always full of encouragement! He expressed joy for this life, believing he was truly a child of God. Those who knew Bob share many memories of his life well lived. Ultimately, Bob looked forward to the promise of eternity with God! E...
Scripture tells us to give thanks to God in all things. We accept that normally but sometimes when something bad happens, we have more trouble. A favorite verse is Romans 8:28. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (NIV) This helps us understand even in the bad God works for the good of those who love Him. There can be two results in this: One way is for us to try to figure out exactly what God intends to do...
Due to nursing home facility visit restrictions, I had to do a telehealth visit via Zoom today for a dear lady of the faith. It was the second time in the last several months that I had to settle for that with her instead of an in-person visit. In her early 90s, she had never talked with anyone by a screen. She was fascinated by the technology. A few weeks ago, she could at least get around in her wheelchair. Cancer has weakened her to the point of being limited to her bed. Yet, today this...
It is with mixed emotions that the Imlers announce their final get-together. Joy, because of all the great memories. And sorrow, because it is coming to an end. Please, consider attending the Nov. 19 Thanksgiving covered dish dinner at 6:30 p.m., in the Imler’s Barn at 1271 Spang Street Extension, Roaring Spring. Bring a side dish. The turkey will be provided. Tom Smith will be sharing music. Below is a note from Tom and JoAnn Smith: Pete and Carol, we want to thank you for allowing us to have a part in many of your meetings over the years. I...
I started thinking I would write about a “heroine” this time. But as I got to working on it, I thought I might also mention the hero. Before you know it, I got the third person involved. The whole story is found in the Old Testament book of Ruth. Ruth would have been my heroine. She does not have typical qualifications so far as we can tell. She is a foreigner, poor, illiterate, with no family connections, or other star-power status. We have no idea about her looks. But she has qualities that make her my heroine. As noted, she is a for...
Ah, there’s nothing like a relaxing morning with a cup of coffee and a nice warm cat on my lap. My cat, Gladys has been spending mornings with me for years. She’s a creature of routine. So am I. My Bibles, devotional books, and laptop have enough Gladys hairs stuck in them to build a new cat. She’s my friend. She’s also on my lap right now, draped across my arms, making typing slightly more difficult, but I don’t mind. Just yesterday a memory popped up on my Facebook timeline. A few years ago...
St. John’s United Church of Christ will be holding a special celebration on Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. to celebrate and acknowledge the wonderful effort put into the Our legacy Campaign that was successfully completed recently. As part of the traditional Thanksgiving service, there will be an effort to show thankfulness to all who have made the project an unqualified success. There will be an unveiling of the special plaque to acknowledge donors to the campaign and all those they wish to honor. According to Earl Springer, St. John’s consistory pre...
We will be observing Veterans Day this week. A part of that observance is a service at the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” Each of the Allied Nations: Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy and the United Sates have tombs dedicated to an Unknown Soldier. The tradition began following the World War I. The tomb is located by Arlington National cemetery. In addition to the soldier from World War I, there is also a soldier from each World War II, the Korean War, and the Viet-Nam War buried nea...
Sometimes in life we find that we are lacking the very thing we need at any given time. Last week I was well down the road on my way to work and already thinking about lunch when I realized I had forgotten my wallet. Thankfully, I had enough change in the car that I did not go hungry. I did have to limit myself, however. Today, I wanted to glue an old pair of my son’s tennis shoes that he wears for work. I found a bottle and tube of adhesive. They were both hard as a brick. I was lacking what I...
One more “Thought” about Daniel, my hero. He is living under the reign of King Darius. He is now an old man. He has been a faithful servant to God and to the king who was sovereign in the land. Several times and in various ways he has helped his kings. He is doing so again. The king has appointed 120 men to serve as overseers in his kingdom. These men were charged with doing whatever would be good for the king and kingdom, to protect it and him from harm and danger. Over these 120, three men...
On Thursday, Oct. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. Vicksburg Grace Brethren Church held its annual Trunk or Treat. Scooby Doo with his Mystery Machine, Mrs. Claus, Day of the Dead, and Frozen were just a few of the themes the group came up with. The children walked from car to car and enjoyed getting treats from everyone. Weather was a plus, though it was a little windy. Everyone was enthusiastic and enjoying the event....
Faith United Methodist Church held a drive-through Trick or Treat on Oct. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. This was held at Woodbury Community Center. This safe, fun way of trick-or-treating was a success. Many cars were seen going through and everyone in and out of the cars were smiling. Southern Cove Fire Company had two trucks, one at the beginning and end of Main Street, to help make it a safe night. Signage was also in place to let motorists know to slow down. Children were also seen scurrying to and...
Southern Cove Fire Company held a Trunk or Treat on Sunday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. The weather was chilly, but there was no rain. Many children attended this event. New Enterprise Church of the Brethren also held a Trunk or Treat on Sunday at the same time. This was planned so children could go to both events, which were within a block of each other. Southern Cove Fire Company provided signage, lighting and a fire truck to assure motorists went slow and all children were safe. The church had...
The unmistakable sound of multi-Dove and Grammy Award-winning recording artist, David Phelps will be featured in Hollidaysburg on Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Grace Bible Church, located at 164 Laurel Lane. This concert event will begin at 7 p.m., and will also feature popular comedian, Mickey Bell. Once a childhood musical prodigy from Tomball, Texas, David Phelps earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Baylor University. Since then, he has become a nationally celebrated vocalist, whose gifts and talents are matched by none. Perhaps best known a...
Reflecting on my recent and ongoing study of the book of Matthew, I thought I’d share some of what I’ve discovered while digging deeper into the Lord’s Prayer and verses that follow it. “This then is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ For...
Another episode: Daniel lived under at least three kings by now. God and Daniel strongly influenced Nebuchadnezzar. That was not the case in this reign. Daniel had been pushed aside. I am sure it was because this king, Belshazzar, lived a wicked life. He wanted no influence for good in his life. Of course it is the job of God-fearing people to influence others. It was the job of Jews. It has become the job of the Church. Unfortunately when the Jews were not living godly lives, they had no influence. The Church in our country must make major...
A few days ago my brother sent my sister and me a bill. As mentioned in my previous column, the three of us traveled over 1,000 toll road miles to Illinois to visit with family from England. The trip lasted what amounted to a few hours over parts of two days. Keep in mind that one of those we came to see was our 3-month-old great-niece. When we saw the total amount for the trip, divided by three we realized it was not cheap but definitely worth it. We enjoyed talking for hours in the vehicle,...
Most heroes develop during a lifetime and are not declared heroes until their adult years. Not so for my hero today. We meet him in his early teen years. He has gone through major trauma. He was taken prisoner after his home, and likely most of his family, and nation have been destroyed. He was marched hundreds of miles into strange surroundings facing a strange culture and language. He was not bereft of friends. He does have three good ones. Here is his dilemma: He is faced with a requirement...

Women of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) in conjunction with the Women's Craft Class held a Holiday Craft Fair and Bake Sale on Saturday, Oct. 16. This event had many craft items from wooden Snowmen to catnip-filled mice. There were also many baked goods and lunch bags to go. The lunch bags consisted of a hot dog or sloppy joe, pretzels, cookies and water. Masks were worn by the women and the public was also asked to wear a mask. Cheryl Zwick is the president of WELCA. Pam...
An old piano was given to us many years ago. It was a Cable Nelson Upright Grand. Although I am not musically gifted, nor had I been taught to play the piano, I thought it might be fun to learn. That never materialized the way I envisioned, but it is now possible for my right hand to stammer through a song if there are not many sharps or flats. My left hand continues to not know what it’s doing. It took three strong men to move the piano into our house. Pianos are quite heavy. This piano has been around since 1945, possibly a bit longer. Its f...
Children’s Disaster Services is offering a workshop to train volunteers in Roaring Spring on Nov. 5 and 6. The workshop will be held at Roaring Spring First Church of the Brethren. Kristine Shunk is the local coordinator (814) 643-0601. The Middle PA District Disaster Response Team is hosting this event to help encourage and train persons to help with the children when a disaster occurs. Children’s Disaster Services has been meeting the needs of children since 1980, working cooperatively with FEMA and the American Red Cross to provide care for...
I want to look at another of my heroes. First we look at three others. I take them as a group because it is impossible to separate them. They are Hananiah, Mischael, and Azariah. You may not know them, at least not by their Hebrew names. If I told you they were Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego you might recognize them better. Actually, their Hebrew names are used more often in their introduction than their Babylonian names but for some reason, the Babylonian names are more familiar. They were...
The Imlers of Roaring Spring are inviting all those who love music, prayers, food and fellowship to come to their home on Friday, Oct. 15, at 6:30 p.m. for all that and more. Tom and Jo Ann Smith of Everett will be present to share music and previous experiences of how God touches lives in so many ways. A buffet of snacks, desserts and special treats will be available as we spend an evening together as part of God’s family. It was a suggestion for all to wear a “funny hat” to add to the joy of a beautiful evening. The Imlers reside at 1271...

The mission of Ladies Encounter is to impact the ladies of the community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The purpose is to present the Gospel message and to encourage unity in Christ. Through this educational and thought-provoking performance, Gutschick’s goal was to reach across generations and touch lives. By the expressions on the faces...
As I type these words, I am just a few days away from a trip with two of my siblings. Our unique journey will take us to the Chicago area to visit our 3-month-old great-niece. Her parents will be there, too. They are coming to America from Liverpool, England, for a wedding. Based on the pictures we have seen, she is a real cutie, with hair way longer than mine. As the time of seeing her in person approaches, I could not help but think about what a different world she is growing up in than her Pe...
My hero continues to grow. Joseph has come to Egypt as a slave at age seventeen. By the age of 30, he rose to be Prime Minister of Egypt. That is a marvel. He did it without doing violence to anyone. But this is not the reason I see him as a hero. He has interpreted Pharaoh’s dream. Pharaoh recognized there would be no one in a better position to get Egypt through the years ahead than Joseph for Joseph worshipped God and God blest Joseph. We have now gone through the seven years of abundant h...

There is no cost for the meal, except a free will offering. At 6:15, Bible Study for elementary ages, youth and adults beg...
A few weeks ago I had written about finding humor in the Bible. Here are a few more places that made me smile… That Time God Called Out Mullets We all remember the mullet haircut, right? Short in the front, long in back, or as the saying goes “Business in the front, party in the back.” Often the sides are shaved even closer. It’s a completely ridiculous style which somehow made a bit of a comeback last year and the year before. In my Complete Jewish Bible it says “I will scatter to the winds...
My hero does not seem to have good fortune in the beginnings of these "Thoughts." Last time he was a slave. This time he is in prison. He is here because he was falsely accused of molesting his master's wife. Remember it was she who attempted to seduce him. He refused and fled. She accused him of the deed. His master acted on her accusation and had him thrown into prison. I wonder a bit if we have the whole story. The normal penalty for Joseph would have been death. So, perhaps Potiphar doubted...
A cemetery walk through the graveyard in downtown Loysburg will be held Sunday, Oct. 3, beginning at 2 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the walk will be held the following Sunday at the same time. Anyone who is interested is invited to attend. Persons may bring a stool or light-weight lawn chair with them if they feel they may need to sit down at some of the grave sites with longer histories to be presented. The walk will be led by David Snyder, who led a similar walk 10 years ago and who has been asked to do it again. He is a member of the...
My Dad used to say there is a right way and a wrong way and there is his way. I think he thought his way was the best! In life there are two basic ways of doing things – the right way and the wrong way. That is a generalization; but we can agree that we face many choices in how to think and act in either good ways or bad. We know that results will come based on our choices. Most people can probably think of many examples in life when they did good or bad and they know what the results of their a...
Here stands my seventeen-year-old-hero in chains, wearing only underwear. His outerwear was taken by his brothers to deceive his father into believing he is dead. He is in chains because he is sold into slavery. He is bought by the captain of Pharaoh's body guard. This man is certainly a strict disciplinarian. He will brook no insubordination, mistakes, or inefficiency. Things could not be much worse. There is one bright hope: Joseph has not been forsaken by his God. He is in a strange land,...
"Adonai will make you the head and not the tail; and you will be only above, never below – if you will listen to, observe and obey the mizvot (command) of Adonai your God and not turn away from any of the words I am ordering you today, neither to the right nor to the left, to follow after other gods and serve them." – Deuteronomy 28:13-14, CJB Just the day before the flood on Sept. 1, Deuteronomy 28:13 was the topic of a daily devotion I had read. "You will be above and never below" took on a m...
Pastor Aaron Musselman, his wife Laura, and his son Jerry hosted a dinner where guests dressed in old-fashioned clothing. This small but powerful church has a theme-based dinner during months with five weeks. They have a service, eat and then have service in the evening. This is a reminder of how people in the time of Jesus would meet on Sundays, worship and eat all day. The purpose of this church is the preaching and teaching of the word of God, the administration of the ordinances of the New T...
My hero this time is Joseph. He is a bona fide hero to many thousands. But that is in a few decades. I need to tell you about his growing up years. They made him a more impressive hero. His parents had a very deep love for one another and that should of made his life wonderful. It was not so. His home life was a shambles. His maternal grandfather was not a good man. He deceived Joseph’s father into marrying his mother’s sister. As a result of that and other consequences, Joseph grew up with his...
If I have learned anything from working through the book of Proverbs, it should be the problem with pride. While I would like to think that the Lord has helped me stay humble, there are still weak spots. The fact that I have never had a drop of alcohol is something I am proud of. That is not a bad thing to take pride in. However, at times, I think my alcohol-free record has led to me looking down on others who choose to drink. The Bible does not ban the drinking of alcohol. It certainly gives...

This meal is free to the community and all are welcome....
