Borrowing a musical passage from John Lennon: "Imagine...it's easy if you try." I will attempt to set the theme for a Christmas Season that you may not have thought about since you were a young child. Imagine a world with no war or the possibility of such, as exemplified by the current conflict in Ukraine. Imagine a planet where all religions manage to set their differences aside and live together in harmony. Try to visualize an America where the citizens are not so divided in ideology, and...
It is 1902, and Daisy Harriman, socialite wife of a successful New York City banker, is planning to travel from her summer home in Newport, Rhode Island, to Manhattan to run a few errands. She is incensed when she finds out that she cannot stay in any of the luxury hotels because she will be an unaccompanied lady. As she opines to her husband about the unfairness of it all, she has an idea. If men can have their own clubs, such as the Princeton Club and the Union Club, why can't ladies have a cl...

On account of the sale of the Cove Cooperative Company not materializing, the company was still doing business with dairy feed, grain and coal sales at Curryville. It was a rough autumn for deer. While fly-fishing and while scouting for wild turkeys, I found a number of deer lying dead for no apparent reasons. Though I discovered these deer after the onset of the autumn archery season, none of the deer that I found appeared to have been shot by archers who then failed to recover them. The first of these deer was just the skeleton of a dead doe (female deer). I had been fishing along a favorite section of a local creek and had crossed the creek to approach the next fishable pocket of water. There she was....
Each December, pastors, writers, and pastors who are writers look for a fresh angle on the Christmas story. It is especially a challenge for those like me who have been around for more than a few decades. The incredibly powerful story of the incarnation is so familiar that it is difficult to come up with something that seems to be new. Maybe we shouldn’t worry about it because the story doesn’t need help from mere humans. It is indeed the greatest story ever told. While there is nothing new under the sun, we can still look for fresh ideas. Rece...
Gene editing is showing promise for ending diseases previously regarded as incurable. But there is a difference between exploring gene editing for the purpose of making people well and as a means to make people into whatever they imagine they would like to become in an effort to create utopia. For instance, some have expressed a desire to improve humanity by creating human/animal hybrid creatures. Others wish for gene editing to be used to make humans more fit for space travel (probably with the goal of settling other planets in order to save...

Isaiah’s prophecy continues having called the future Messiah ‘Wonderful’ he goes on to call Him ‘Counselor’. It is a term we hear used for lawyers, judges, and experts in the Law in courtrooms. Most certainly we will see Jesus, The Christ, fulfilling that role. He was accused of destroying the Law and the Prophets, but responded by saying He did not come to destroy the Law or Prophets but to fulfill them. (See St. Mathew 5:17-20) This He certainly did helping people see and understand the depth of meaning, the spirit, not simply the Letter of T...

The fourth annual Shop Local vendor show will shut down West Second Street where it will be filled with local vendors and food trucks on...

Susan Houck, one of the chairwomen this year for the event, said that she picked this theme because she found a love of Christmas gnomes during a trip to Germany...
