Ninety-eight hunters took part in Pennsylvania’s 2019 one-week general elk hunt, which closed Nov. 9. Most left elk country with a trophy. Eighty-nine elk were taken by hunters during the season. And for those licensed to hunt antlered elk, also known as bulls, the success rate was 100 percent, with 27 of 27 tags filled. Successful hunters within 24 hours of harvest are required to bring their elk to a check station, where tissue samples are collected to test for chronic wasting disease, brucellosis, and tuberculosis. To date none of these d...
Not long ago, I wrote that the passage of a bill allowing Sunday hunting was unlikely. I am now eating crow about that column. On Oct. 30, SB 147 was passed by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives without debate by a 144-54 vote. It took a couple compromises to reverse the fortune of the bill that had seemed unlikely to pass. One of these is that hunters will have to secure written permission from landowners to hunt on private properties on Sundays. The fines for violating the provision wil...

Thankfulness is not a seasonal dress, (writes Elizabeth Lathrop Powers,) To wear awhile and then pack away; It is a garment meant for daily wear, Not just to decorate the holiday. Its colors will not fade with constant use; The fabric will not weaken with the wear. Each fold will keep its beauty and its strength And all who touch it will absorb a share. 'Tis not a gown to purchase for a price, Nor copy as to cut and fit and line; It must be patterned by one's circumstance And fashioned to the...

It's been a wild and wacky life. I've had the opportunity to work at many different places doing many different things. One thing that I've learned is that each job requires specific knowledge pertaining only to that job. The general public, unless they too have worked the same job, does not possess this particular knowledge and has no understanding of what you do or why you do it. Here are some examples: In the heavy highway construction industry, three layers of asphalt are generally used...

His Nazarite vow brought him to the Temple, perhaps more times than normal for worship and prayer. Nearly at the end of the vowed time, he was in the Temple and suddenly some Asian Jews grabbed him and made accusations against him. The accusations: This man teaches against the Jewish people. He teaches against the La...

Each year, dozens of students are not dressed properly for the winter season at no fault of their own, nor the parents. Understand, Hollidaysburg does have those stubborn ones who will wear shorts and hoodies all year round. During the Christmas season, the school nurses will call parents who are on the lower end of the income guidelines and ask if they would like their child to participate in a Christmas program giving those in need new clothes. But what about those children who are not in the lower income guidelines, and the parents who are...

Throughout our lives, we meet all kinds of people; and that fact alone makes life interesting. After all, the world would be a pretty boring place if all of us were identical in what we think, say, and do. The colleagues I've encountered in the education field are no exception. Some teachers went "by the book" in their dealings with students and administrators, while others followed their own set of guidelines. One teacher in particular seemed to defy authority and rules more than most, and...
God intends for us to be overcomers. And, he gives us the means to overcome. Dr. Jeremiah uses the armor of God from Ephesians 6 to explain how God equips us to overcome in this life. He also uses biblical and current examples of people who have overcome. He begins with David in the Bible. He overcame Goliath by his dependence on God. He ran toward the challenge and did not run away. David overcame weakness with strength. The theme of the book is found in Ephesians 6 verses 10 through 18. He...
To the Editor: In reference to the story “Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Pilot To Be Implemented in Pa.,” on Page B-7 of the Nov. 7, 2019, edition of the Herald, speed cameras in work zones are for revenue. If not, then why do we not do things like adopt the zipper merge, and post 85th percentile speed limits? Low speed limits cause a decent speed variation between the vehicles, which promotes tailgating, constant passing, and rapidly approaching a vehicle. Here is Michigan’s strategy: Most freeway work zones have workers behind concrete...

By THOMAS SCHMITT For the Herald The Tuesday, Nov. 12, Spring Cove School District School Board and Committee of the Whole Meeting was highlighted by a lengthy discussion on the district entering into a three-year contract with Comcast for internet services in the district. The district solicitor cautioned the board about the dangers of entering into a three-year contract with Comcast since the termination fee to the district if they opted to do so would be “unbelievably high,” amounting to approximately $77,000. The solicitor stated that the...

As many of you know, Karen and I suffered a loss on Sunday, Nov. 10, when the Martinsburg laundromat caught fire. The damage to the property was significant but no one was hurt. As I stood there on the sidewalk watching my business burn, I had a lot of thoughts. One of them was, "This is a life-changing event." That is certainly true, but I'm hoping that it is life changing only by adding a story that I can tell to my grandkids. I hope it ends with me telling them how Karen and got the laundroma...
