  • In Tune with Music

    Oct 31, 2024

Last night I got to attend one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. It was the US Navy jazz band, the Commodores. The event was free, which made it even more enjoyable for me. It was so amazing to hear different generations, genders, and races of Navy personnel come together to play some incredible music. As Edgar Winter said, “Music is very spiritual, it has the power to bring people together”. Hundreds were brought together for the sold-out show. I had a front row seat, which allowed more room for my feet to tap the entire time. My only...

  • A Lesson from the Airport

    Joel Kletzing, Herald Correspondent|Oct 31, 2024

When returning from a mission trip recently, our family was eager to get home. It had been well over twenty-four hours since we set out on the journey. At Dulles there was a lot of waiting in lines for shuttles, immigration, customs and baggage. On our flight were perhaps twenty passengers who were ill, so there was a fleet of wheelchairs waiting at the terminal. While waiting for a shuttle, we kept hearing from behind “Excuse, please!” We would shift and allow skillful airport personnel, many of whom were managing two wheelchairs single han...

  • Thought for the Week

    Paster Earl Herr|Oct 31, 2024

Not long ago, there was a story about a whale entangled in fishing nets. It was likely going to cost the whale her life. But, fortunately there were scuba divers who worked together to cut the nets away and allow the whale to go free. There are spiritual entanglements we should be aware of just as dangerous, or more so, than fishing nets. There is a specific story in II Kings 3, with surrounding Scriptures, about just this very thing. The nation of Moab and its king Mesha, were subjugated to...

  • Hauser's Old Barbershop Gets a Facelift

    Natalie Gorsuch, Williamsburg Correspondent|Oct 31, 2024

“I chose the Peace Corps for many reasons, and in many ways, Tonga chose me,” Scarlett Vogle, of Alexandria, said at Biddle’s Brewing in Williamsburg last Wednesday evening October 23. She was on a break from the Peace Corps and was doing two lectures during her time back in the States. “There are so many reasons I wanted to join the Peace Corps – I applied when I was fresh out of college and ended up teaching abroad through a different organization, and then applied in February of 2020,” Vo...

  • How To Know If Your House Is Haunted: Tips From A Pennsylvania Ghost Hunter

    Colin Deppen, Spotlight PA|Oct 31, 2024

I think my new house might be haunted. I’ve not experienced anything particularly unnerving there, to be clear. No apparitions. No voices. No sudden chills or shut doors. (There was a night light in the bathroom that violently strobed every time I walked by, but I’m pretty sure that was just a faulty sensor. Pretty sure.) My suspicions have to do with the age of the place — it’s almost as old as the Civil War — and its location: It directly abuts a former lumber mill that a neighbor, while struggling against the pull of his formidabl...

  • Daylight Saving Time Ends November 3: Prepare to "Fall Back"

    CATI KEITH, Editor|Oct 31, 2024

Residents in the Cove will soon gain an extra hour of sleep as Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3. Clocks should be set back one hour, shifting from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. As autumn advances, the shift marks the return to Standard Time, giving early risers a bit more daylight in the morning hours. When looking for a reason for why we observe the time change, we can look to Robert Garland, an industrialist and former Republican Pittsburgh City Council member who is also known as “the father of daylight saving time.” “It...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Oct 31, 2024

In Eric Shield’s October 17th personality profile of Blair County native and Hollywood celebrity Hedda Hopper, he mentioned that she has a star on the Walk of Fame in Los Angeles. In 2010 I was visiting relatives in LA and drove into downtown to see some of the tourist attractions. I found a rare parking space along the Walk of Fame boulevard. When I stepped over the curb and looked down I came face-to-face with Hedda’s star, which I proceeded to photograph. It can be seen in the photo section of my website www.jameswentz.com. • Cryptophasia

    Miranda Madden, Intern|Oct 31, 2024

This is part three of a series on twins written by Herald intern Miranda Madden. When twins grow up, they usually grow up within the same proximity. They spend most, if not all, of their time together, and they learn and grow as a pair. As a result, with absorbing all this new information together, they begin to communicate with each other in a language that is unknown to surrounding people. Cryptophasia is a phenomenon in which a language is created by twins and understood only by them. This phenomenon is also known as “twin speak” or “twin la...

  • My 2023 Autumn Turkey

    RICHARD TATE|Oct 31, 2024

Last year’s autumn turkey season began with a thud for me. Bob, my son, and I were to hook up and hunt together on the opening day. However, he did not show up at daybreak, and I couldn’t reach him on the cellphone he and my wife “advise” me to carry. I guessed I didn’t have service. Anyhow, after speaking with another hunter about where each of us would hunt that morning, I progressed out a Jeep trail then entered the woods where I had seen turkeys a couple days before. I hunted all morning but had no luck. I decided to go home for lunch. On...

The Green Hornets used their improved run game and timely defense to control the second half, e...
