“This was the easy way to go,” Blair County Planning Commission’s Dave McFarland told Catharine Township Supervisors during the meeting Thursday evening, Sept. 21, in regard to getting funding for the Ganister Sewer project. McFarland is referring to the CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) funding. In previous years, surveys garnered a 49 percent low-income result, with only two homes needing to complete surveys and supervisors were hopeful to get the 51 percent to qualify for CDBG funds. However, this wasn’t the case. A new round of surv...

  • From the 'Burg to Your Kitchen

    NATALIE GORSUCH, Williamsburg Correspondent|Sep 28, 2023

Fall is here and there’s nothing I love more. From the leaves changing to my favorite sport — football — making its long-awaited comeback, to the pumpkins, caramel and of course, apples. For as long as I can remember, we make this special and super-easy apple crisp in our family, and I’d like to share that recipe. Ingredients: Crumble Topping 2/3 cup old fashioned oats 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 cup of salted butter, cubed Apple Filling: 3-4 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced...

  • Thought for the Week

    Pastor Earl Herr|Sep 28, 2023

The subject of fasting came up in study recently. I thought I might utilize the subject in a "Thought." It is not discussed very much and so it may be an unfamiliar subject for many of us. First of all, fasting is not a means for dietary control. i.e. It is not "I need to lose a few pounds, so I will fast." Certainly this can work, and there is nothing wrong with doing it. But this is not the reason or purpose for fasting. Fasting is closely connected to prayer. So, we can determine there is a s...

  • In the Beginning

    LINDA SOLLENBERGER|Sep 28, 2023

I often feel that those of us who have gone to church for most of our lives have an advantage when it comes to reading scripture. We bring to that reading hidden knowledge, a sense of what is to come, and many experiences. But what about people who are hearing the gospel for the first time? What about those people who were on the outside of the crowds that Jesus attracted? The stories Jesus told must have sounded odd at times. For Christians, Christ’s life, death, and resurrection are the enormous power that exerts our imagination and drives u...

    KATHY MELLOTT|Sep 28, 2023

Most were little boys, 14 or 15 years old, frightened for their families and homes. They were frightened for their own lives. Yet they crept about Blair and Bedford counties, loaded gun in hand and stomachs growling for lack of food. The country these kids were determined to defend and save could not or would not deal with the basic needs of the unpaid northern soldiers of Pennsylvania. To stay alive and able to do battle, they had to resort to measures they detested, actions that left them with a scarred reputation they carry to this day and...

Herald of Oct. 6, 1898 Mr. M. Z. Bassler of Henrietta has been installed as associate editor of the Herald. He is well and favorably known throughout Morrisons Cove as a local writer of experience and is thoroughly competent to fill the position. • Bloomfield, NBC: The Class of '63

    PAUL SNYDER, For the Herald|Sep 28, 2023

For the Sept. 21 edition of the Herald, Linda Williams wrote an excellent overview of the formation of the Northern Bedford County School District. If I may, I’d like to add a few words about the place that the Bloomfield school and the class of 1963 occupied in that process. I have often stated that I grew up in the northern suburbs of Flitch, which, technically, is the southern portion of Bloomfield Township. The Bloomfield school, on a rise just south of Bakers Summit, had three classrooms with the potential for four. There were three t...
