Since we’re still in BBQ season, sometimes, you just want some dessert after eating the picnic food. My best friend Judy Olivieri made this sweet treat for our Fourth of July party, and it was a hit! Strawberry Crunch Cake Ingredients: For the cake: 1 package white cake mix 1 – 3 oz. box strawberry jello 4 eggs 1 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup water For the strawberry crunc...
It feels like a short few months ago when I was sitting down with Mike and Brittany Biddle in an igloo, looking at the bank building discussing their hopes and dreams for the building. Flash forward a few months. Biddle's Brewing's location in town officially opened July 1. "It feels like it's been in the making for so long," Brittany said. Luckily for the Biddles, no major renovations were needed in the building. "It was stuck in the 1990s," Mike said. "The style, the building, the pink salmon...

Experts say the formation of Morrisons Cove was determined by the Ice Age giving our homeland its canoe-shaped basin formed by three mountains. These mountains give Cove residents a sense of security that tornadoes likely will not sweep through as lunch time approaches and nights dozing in the bathtub are not common. But our mountains — Dunings to the west, Lock to the north and Tussey Mountain forming the eastern border — have small, seemingly insignificant weaknesses. The gaps, as these areas have become know, were discovered by the first...

Living on a farm outside of East Freedom is a young man who has recently contended for a national championship. His name is Aden Dively, and he is just 13 years old and is entering eighth grade at Spring Cove. Aden and his dad are enthusiastic bass fishermen. During the summer they fish for river smallmouths nearly every weekend on a catch-and-release basis. To say that they are successful is an understatement. In fact, Aden has landed smallies over 20 inches long. As if this weren't enough,...
Exploring the possibility of reintroducing American martens to Pennsylvania will include consideration of an additional public survey gauging residents’ opinions on the matter. The Board of Commissioners tabled a proposal until the results of a soon-...

With the Cove Carnival kicking off this week and two nights of fireworks scheduled, area residents could be in the mood to extend their Fourth of July celebration. But if you decide to break out any leftover fireworks and set them off, you will be breaking the law in most Cove-area municipalities. Following state law, with few variations, local municipalities have adopted ordinances regulating where and when fireworks can be set off, and although fireworks are available to purchase year-round, there are only a handful of days they can legally...

In early December of 1955, excitement was building in the halls of Williamsburg High School and in the borough of Williamsburg as the new basketball season was rapidly approaching. There were two primary reasons for all the positive anticipation. First, the football squad of Coach William “Bill” Rhodes had just posted the school’s only undefeated, untied regular season (10-0) in Blue Pirate history. Since football’s beginning in 1926, only one other squad had been undefeated. The Blue Pirate team (then “Little Giants) of 1939 had no losses bu...

It is not unusual for me to ask hospice patients what their favorite hymn is. For the reply to be In the Garden is not at all unusual. That old song looks ahead with joy at the thought of abiding with Jesus in heaven forever. For that to happen, Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane before going to the cross. The events of that night seemed more appropriate for rough city streets than for a garden. We understand that when a person is arrested there is typically very good reason for it. Sometimes arrests are peaceful and other times they can...
I know, I kind of left you hanging there. Stick with me though, and we’ll finish that statement together. I think we can all agree that there are seasons of life that are just plain hard. These seasons can last for just fleeting moments, and they can last what seems like a lifetime. And your hard season can be radically different from my hard season. There are people, in our own community, that are hurting, dealing with addictions, suffering from loss and heartache. If you are reading this and you can identify with this, I want to bring you s...
