Chairman Bob Detwiler introduced the guest speaker, James Hostetler of Bedford, who has written four books. Hostetler is involved with Old Bedford Village. Beginning this August, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College (PHCC) is planning the start of its new certificate in Sustainable Hydroponic Agriculture and Rural Entrepreneurship (SHARE). The Pennsylvania Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee approved a measure in June that would create a block grant program to support the development of specialty crops, according to the bill’s sponsor, state Sen. Judy Ward (R-30th). Senate Bill 661 would create the “Commonwealth Specialty Crop Block Grant Program” to support products that are not already covered under a similar federal program. The Freedom Township Volunteer Fire Company recently purchased a UTV all-terrain vehicle to help assist those in need in more hard-to-reach places such as brush fires, ATV accidents and lost or injured hikers.
