I’m very happy not only that we’ve received the donations but that the commen...

  • Coach Baker 'Never really had a plan'

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Feb 22, 2024

Dave Baker never had a plan. Not when he took a job as a biology teacher at Williamsburg Community High School right out of IUP in 1967 and wanted to coach a sport, any sport at any level, just to stay involved in athletics. Not when he finally acquiesced to taking over as the Blue Pirates varsity football coach four years later, when Williamsburg was struggling to find someone to replace Jerry Campbell. Not when he applied to succeed A.J. Hoenstine and guide Central back in 2011. And certainly not in 2001, when, after 30 years leading...

  • Some Winter Fishing

    RICH TATE, Outdoor Sports Columnist|Feb 22, 2024

Over the years many people have asked me if I go ice fishing. “Nope,” I reply. “Ice fishing’s past the point of being a normal sportsman’s activity.” I let it end like that. I do not tell my questioners that I sometimes go fly-fishing during the winter – which is also a little off the wall. I do not make winter fly-fishing adventures nearly as often as I did 25 years ago. In those days I regularly sandwiched fly-fishing adventures between cross-country skiing outings. But, with global warming – less snow, with the type of snow we now get clin...

  • Family Matters

    PASTOR LEE SEESE|Feb 22, 2024

Once again, I have an opportunity to be part of a community theater production. It’s been a good time getting to know new people and getting reacquainted with old friends. Most of them do not have a church connection. The biggest challenge is memorization since I have more lines this time around. Hopefully I will get them down when the lights come on. This play is all about family. Although it is a comedy, there are various themes that makes me think about the connection with family and the Christian walk. There is an engaged couple dealing w...

  • Thought for the Week

    Feb 22, 2024

Sometimes I get pretty busy. Lots of my reading/studying time is spent preparing to teach, preach, or write. This week I had a couple of free hours and decided to do some study for my personal benefit. I chose to study the life of King Hezekiah of Judah. I found it most enjoyable and beneficial. In fact, I think it will be worthwhile for us to look at this study together. Primary Scriptures regarding Hezekiah’s life are: II Kings chapters 16-21, II Chronicles 28-33 and Isaiah 36-39. There are o...
