Last August, my twin sister and I had the opportunity to attend an unusual festival – the Twins Days Festival. As you can probably guess, this festival is specifically for twins (or triplets, quadruplets, etc.). Taking place in Twinsburg, Ohio, the festival lasts around three days and brings in over 1,000 attendees. Twinsburg was founded in 1817, but was originally called Millsville. In 1819, identical twins Moses and Aaron Wilcox purchased 4,000 acres of land and renamed the town Twinsburg. Sin...
This is part three of a series on twins written by Herald intern Miranda Madden. When twins grow up, they usually grow up within the same proximity. They spend most, if not all, of their time together, and they learn and grow as a pair. As a result, with absorbing all this new information together, they begin to communicate with each other in a language that is unknown to surrounding people. Cryptophasia is a phenomenon in which a language is created by twins and understood only by them. This phenomenon is also known as “twin speak” or “twin la...
This is part two of a series on twins written by Herald intern Miranda Madden. I’ve been a twin for most of my life (give or take a couple minutes), and when it comes to being a twin, many theories have been created because of the close bond and connection we have with each other. Going through various beliefs about twins’ alleged abilities, I’ll see whether they’re true or not based on my own experiences. Twin Telepathy Can twins really read each other’s minds? This belief, that twins have extrasensory perception (also known as “twintuit...
Miranda Madden is a senior at Slippery Rock University and spent the past summer as an intern at the Herald. This is the first in a series of articles about twins that Miranda was hounded by a certain co-worker to write because she is a twin. Enjoy! Twins in mythology seem to be a phenomenon that brings about conflicting views. They can never be just normal people; they are either providers of great success or providers of mass destruction–no in between! Most mythological tales depict twins as beings who bring great fortune and prosperity. Gree...
Just like that, the summer is almost over and my internship is coming to an end. I started interning at the Morrisons Cove Herald in May, and throughout my time here, you’ve most likely seen and read the articles I have written. During the summer, I have learned so much that will help me with my future goals. I am an English major, and having the opportunity to consistently write and edit in a real publication setting has provided me with skills I will utilize in all my future endeavors. I wrote stories every week, I discovered much about C...
Next month starts the beginning of the season for local cloggers. Located in Newry, the Horseshoe Cloggers will begin their weekly lessons for anyone who wishes to learn. The group offers dance lessons for clogging, which is defined as a dance form distinguished by its unique tap shoes and fast-paced footwork. Clogging shoes hold four taps on each shoe, with two on the heel and two on the toe. According to Horseshoe Cloggers instructor Tracie Madden, "In clogging, you keep time with the heel of...
The Morrisons Cove Herald has been around for over a century and has recorded much of the area's history, with not only stories but photos as well. Upstairs at the Park building, in the corner of a storage room, sits Tracie Madden and Kim Unger–two people responsible for sorting through the many photographs the Herald still has. According to them, there are thousands of photos they have to go through and organize. "We're organizing photos by month and year and separating them depending on if t...
Another successful weekend for the Roaring Spring Dam Days has passed. Although the weather was uncertain, every event turned out great. Friday kicked off the fun with yard sales that residents hosted. Numerous people throughout the community sold items ranging from clothes to appliances. On Saturday, a free community picnic was held, which offered food from Frederick's Meat Market. Hot dogs, hamburgers, macaroni and potato salad, and baked beans were available for everyone to eat. "It's a nice...
Martinsburg resident Kay Weyant was extra excited this year for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. Because for this year's games, her granddaughter competed in them. She is a recent graduate of the University of Florida where she was a student athlete. This isn't the first time she has represented the US in the...
For the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Garver Memorial YMCA in Roaring Spring is holding a parks and recreation program this summer for children ages 6 to 13. Starting every weekday at 8 a.m. until 12 p.m., children are able to spend their time outside making crafts, playing games, performing science experiments, and doing water activities. Such activities include water tag, a game in which the children each have their own water guns and chase each other around. Another game...

The Dragons FC soccer team, from June 29 to June 30, competed in three games in the U19 male division. Each game was five against five. The tournament also had a "no shoes allowed" policy, so...
Arboriculture is the cultivation and study of trees, shrubs and other perennial woody plants, and an arborist practices that cultivation. Spanning over a two-day period of Friday, May 17 to Saturday, May 18, a tree climbing competition, to test one's arborist climbing skills, was held at Morrisons Cove Memorial Park. However, calling this just a tree climbing competition is seemingly an understatement; the competition consisted of various, difficult challenges to assess participants'...
Recently, 19 members of the Martinsburg Brethren in Christ Church (MBIC) traveled to Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. There, the members had the opportunity to teach children about God and help out at several ministries. Erin Barley, a member who went along, described the trip as something “I’m really glad that I did.” The members mostly spent their time at El Camino Academy, a Christian school located in northwestern Bogotá. The group ran the school’s “June Jamboree,” a program involving mis...

Sue Blanchard, the woman running the sale, has been helping out at the cause for two years. “The community benefits because they get books at good prices that they can read and share, a...
