The Herald is publishing as much local information as it can about the reaction to the coronavirus and COVID-19. The Herald’s niche is providing news about Morrisons Cove, so that’s what we are doing. However, we cannot squeeze everything into these pages, nor can we capture all the news about this event on our website. And, of course, none of us are experts on public health or diseases. So in the interest of providing as much information as we can, the Herald has gathered several resources which are presenting reliable, responsible inf... Full story
It's impossible to get away from news about the Coronavirus and Covid-19 these days. But strangely enough as we are immersed in information, reliable information is still hard to find. For example, some information is circulating on social media stating that the virus lives in the throat of an infected human before it moves to the lungs and can therefore be killed by gargling with salt water. I have encountered no medical experts who agree with this and have read several who have stated flatly that the information about salt water is not true.... Full story
Roaring Spring Borough Council at its regular meeting Monday, March 9, gave conditional approval to plans for a brew pub downtown. Council also ordered police Chief Greg Wyandt to research the costs of police body and cruiser cameras and report to council. Council approved on a 4-1 vote the conditional use proposal for a brew pub at 269 Main Street. Councilmember Sue Ann Feather voted against the proposal as presented. Councilmember Dane E. Noel abstained from the vote. Councilmember Kayla Noel was not present at the meeting. Councilmember...
I received a note from loyal Herald reader Linda Cope this week. She wrote, In reading the “75 years Ago” section in the Feb. 22, 2020 edition, a question came to mind after reading of Norbert Rhodes, who in 1945 wrote a letter from his POW camp. This caused me to wonder if he came home from the war. If so, did he continue to live in the Cove area? This often happens when I read the looking-back section. I guess I always want to see how things turn out. I would find it interesting if there was a follow-up column where people could offer the...
On Jan. 9, 2020, U.S. Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13), released the following statement opposing the House Democrats’ War Powers Resolution: “The Iranian Regime is no friend of the United States. Attempting to strip our Commander-in-Chief of the ability to protect American lives – during the week of an attack on our troops – is the wrong move. Congress should be standing together against Iranian threats and provocations. “Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States has eliminated some of the most gruesome terrorists and dangero... I was saddened to hear of the passing of Daryl Albright of Roaring Spring on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Daryl worked at the Morrisons Cove Herald from 2002 to 2011 as a van driver and newsstand delivery person. His job was to pick up the bundles of printed Herald newspapers from the printer and return them to the Herald office. He did that on Wednesday. On Thursday, he then took the sorted and re-bundled Herald editions to the various newsstands around the Cove. He also delivered sacks of labeled Heralds to the area post offices for mailing. Daryl w...

As many of you know, Karen and I suffered a loss on Sunday, Nov. 10, when the Martinsburg laundromat caught fire. The damage to the property was significant but no one was hurt. As I stood there on the sidewalk watching my business burn, I had a lot of thoughts. One of them was, "This is a life-changing event." That is certainly true, but I'm hoping that it is life changing only by adding a story that I can tell to my grandkids. I hope it ends with me telling them how Karen and got the laundroma... The Herald is reminding readers that it now publishes an online version and has launched a sister publication, the Hollidaysburg Herald. The online version of the Morrisons Cove Herald is free to all those who purchase print subscriptions. Those who live outside the Cove community and who have experienced mail delays may now switch to an online-only subscrition. The full content of the Herald is uploaded every Thursday around noon so online-only subscribers will not experience mail delays. Both Herald websites are designed to be viewed on...
OPINION Since the Herald launched its website, I’ve had a few calls from people asking why the online version of the Herald does not cost less than the print edition of the Herald. I thought I’d address this, since it is on the minds of some people. First, I’d like to remind all of those in the Cove community that if you like having a reliable news source, you do indeed have to pay for it. Somehow, over the last decade or so, it has gotten into the heads of some people that news should be free. Well, it’s not. And it can’t be. News is like a...
Gage Carpenter of Dn'D Family Farms, Roaring Spring, shows off "Big Boy," one of his four entries in the 2019 Blair County Junior Livestock Sale on Aug. 13 at Memorial Park. Big Boy was purchased by the Morrisons Cove Herald and weighed 90 pounds. The Herald then donated the lamb back for sale to benefit the Scholarship Fund....
I’d like to offer a different perspective on the recent appearance of Robert Mueller before the U.S. House of Representatives in late July. Millions of words have been exchanged about Mueller and his famous report, but that’s not what I want to discuss. I want to discuss Mueller the man. I believe that both political parties shamelessly used Mueller and tried to get him to carry their water. I believe that both of them insulted his honor and integrity and neither had the standing to do so. Were I forced to chose someone to guard my house or man...
I’m going to ask supporters of President Donald J. Trump to pause a moment in their admiration of the man and consider an unintended side effect of his presidency. I know that many Trump supporters (and some political independents) think that the whole “Trump is destroying democracy” argument is overplayed and is just hyperbole from the Democrats and Anti-Trumpers. But now that the Supreme Court has given Trump the go-ahead to do an end-run around congress and divert funds from the military to built an expensive wall, maybe some will be able...
National Public Radio broadcast another in its series on rural health care on May 14. The story described how the town of Fort Scott, Kansas, is trying to cope with the closing of a local hospital. The hospital had served the community for more than a century but recently closed. According to wikipedia, Fort Scott is a city in and is the county seat of Bourbon County, Kansas, 88 miles south of Kansas City, on the Marmaton River. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 8,087. The community was notified by an official public notice...
In the movie “Brazil,” the roads and highways of the future are lined with billboards placed edge to edge, creating a wall. Director Terry Gilliam was making a point about over-commercialization and out-of-control consumerism. The billboards are not an important plot point. They’re just a backdrop to character actions in the move. But they have the effect of making viewers think, “Wow. That’s kind of crazy to have endless billboards like that.” I noticed the other day that a new large billboard is apparently being put up on Cove Mountain Ro...
Are you an out-of-state Herald subscriber? Do you frequently get your Herald edition several days or even a week late? There’s a solution for that. I’d like to remind all Herald subscribers – but especially those who don’t live in Pennsylvania – that the Herald now offers online subscriptions. The online version of the Herald presents the same news and photos as the print edition. You won’t be missing a thing by subscribing online. As paperback versions of hard-bound books used to state: “Not one word has been omitted.” In fact, when Herald man...
I'd like to remind Herald advertisers and subscribers that you might be getting fake emails from the Herald stating that you need to click on a link to view an invoice. These billing emails might look like they're coming from the Herald, but they are not. A handful of advertising clients and even a few subscribers have received email notices that appear to have been sent from Herald staff members. These messages claim that the recipient has an overdue invoice that requires immediate attention, a... Full story
I finally gave up and submitted to jury duty. I was assigned, and attended, on Monday, March 4. It was less painful than I feared. Blair County Judge Daniel J. Milliron kept things moving. He tolerated only minimal delays from attorneys and defendants, clearly explained to the jury pool what was going on and added occasional touches of wry humor. The result was that we were done by 5:37 p.m., with four juries selected. I am not on any of them. It turns out that lawyers do not want newspaper publishers on their jury. I am being snarky here. I ha...
Two people recently died who had an influence on my life, so I was sad to see them go. They’re two people you’ve probably never heard of: Harris Wofford and John C. Bogle. Harris Wofford was appointed to the United States Senate in 1991 by Gov. Robert P. Casey following the death of Sen. H. John Heinz III in an airplane crash. (If you’re like me and have seen more than a half-century roll past, then you might remember that shocking event.) At the time, I was a rookie reporter at the Altoona Mirror, covering the City Hall beat. I wore an imagi...
